Jay, For a major fan of Mahler works, you should be very interested in this recording of Bernstein conducting the M9 with the Berlin Philharmoniker ...

I found the Handel's 12 Concerti Grossi Op. 6 by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra quite well performed, modern instruments notwithstanding. I have had this original set for some times ...

New 14 CD set: Richter in Hungary

Link Here Click on this image when you get to the page - [IMG]

I am not sure if any/all of this has been released before. These performances do not appear on Trovar, but that discography only covers CDs released in the pianist's lifetime.

I have been reading a lot of good things about this set, not just the performances, but I hear the sound is excellent as well.

A yahoo group has been established to help those outside of Hungary get a copy:
    [email protected]
    Membership is fast and free.

I also suggest that all fans of Richter join the informative yahoo group:
    http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/sviatoslavrichter/
It's free and the folks there are knowledgeable and membership may be required to join the first group I mentioned.

In addition, I read this morning that amazon.de will have this set for sale on February 19. However, I don't see it on their site.

Yes, I have this one, Stuart. I like his Sony 9th so well, though, I hardly ever listen to any other version. But every now and then, I'll pull the Berlin version out and listen to it.

    Rachmaninoff/Tchaikovsky

Although I spend most of my classical listening time with Baroque, I'm looking for recommendations for the Symphonies of Rach and Tchai.

I'm light on the Rachmaninoff with only Symphony No. 2 (though I do have Concerto No. 2 also). I've got Symphonies 2, 4, 5, & 6 by Tchaikovsky (along with Romeo & Juliet, 1812 and a couple of concerti).

What should my next symphony purchase be for each of these two composers in your opinion? Feel free to also suggest the versions you enjoy. Thanks.

For Tchaikovsky, I like Karajan's 1976/1977 recordings. The DG Double will get you 4, 5 and 6 for cheap. For Rachmaninov, I like Ormandy, it's OOP but some used copies for not too much are available over at amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...F8&qid=1264976294&sr=8-3-spell&condition=used

For an intense, unique Pathetique symphony, I suggest trying Bernstein's 1987 recording on DG.

Get the Martha Argerich recording of the Third Rachmaninoff piano concerto:

Yevgeny Mravinsky has an impact in Tchaikovsky's Symphonies Nos. 4, 5, 6 like no other:

A great performance, no doubt. However, I prefer Janis/Dorati by a nose. The coupled Rach PC 2 is excellent as well. Argerich (and Rudy/Jansons) are my close runner-ups for the Rach 3. I suggest getting the Argerich coupling with her exciting reading of Tchaikovsky PC 1 with Kondrashin.

I have heard many accolades for Yevgeny Mravinsky's Tchaikovsky but do not own the recording.

Appreciate the suggestions, but other than the Mravinsky, I don't see much recommended for Symphonies by Tschai or Rach. Maybe I don't "need" any others other than what I listed - I was just looking for any "essential" melodic symphonies by either that I don't have.

Regarding concertos 1 & 3, I'm also interested, but looks like the Argerich Rach 3 is a live recording (with applause and all), which is not my preference. Any other suggestions welcome.

    Thanks, guys.

You may want to check out this very reasonably priced set by Bernstein, recorded during what I believe to be the golden age of the NYPO. It has been on my shopping list. I just have not gotten around to get the set ...

That is a good deal, coop (though as mentioned I do already own four of those six symphonies. And regarding Rach, looks like Symphony 2 which I've got, is the one to have (at least by its popularity in what's available).
