For Tchaikovsky, try the the concertos.

I recommend the following two discs, each paied with another wonderful work.

The Heifetz disc is an SACD.

This Argerich on DG is a studio recording (as opposed to a live concert as on the Philips)?

Just finished listening to this one. An incredible, rip roaring Rach 3 by Horowitz, live from 1941 with Barbirolli. Those who enjoy Argerich's exciting account should try this one.

Next to him, she sounds like a ***** cat.

Unfortunately the sound is poor, but with a special performance like this, I don't care.

Just thinking back - the first time I heard the Prokofiev, it was being performed by Amy Irving . . . sort of.

    Boulez leads CSO

Pierre Boulez, the greatest living conductor, IMHO. Saw him in 2008 and 2009 during his annual visit to Chicago to conduct the CSO, where he is conductor emeritus. Unbeliveable stuff both times, especially last year's Stravinsky/Carter/Varese program. Here is an LA Times review of last weekend's performance. Pierre Laurent-Aimard was there, too? I really screwed up not flying out this year. Love the gossip about the CSO flutist who bad-mouthed the LA Phil.

I received my latest MDT order yesterday. Really enjoying a few Bach Cantatas SACD's by Sigiswald Kuijken and Le Petite Band. One-voice-per-part and an outstanding DSD recording. Add in some thorough notes by the conductor (two booklets) and you've got a winner. Although only a single disc, this is one $18 package worth more than its price. These are nearly as good as Koopman's, on first listen. I really think the Cantatas are some of the best music Bach wrote. There are some hack jobs (relatively speaking, of course), wherein Bach had to write on deadline to get something out for a Sunday service, but the gems are wonderful and Kuijken's notes help the layman understand why. Cool stuff.

Mention of Boulez upthread reminds of this fantastic LP set I got for peanuts money recently. I previously had a James Levine version, but much prefer this one, totally hypnotic.

CD seems to be available with different packaging to my LP box.

Amazon.com sent me an e-mail this morning. The headline offers 3 Philips twofers for $30, but the e-mail itself itself is garbled. I can't find the link or the corresponding offer at the web site. Can anyone help?

Also, while hunting around, I noticed they have the Argerich DG solo recital box for $20. Even though I have about half of the contents, I can't pass it up at that price.

I'm interested in this set too, although there are some more important things in my wish-list now.

As for Mravinsky's twofer on DG (Nos. 4-6) - GET THEM TOO! The 6th is simply unbeleivable. I have it on old Soviet vinyl too, so it's a love since my childhood. Nobody else has done it that way.

Other options worth mentioning for the 6th: Pletnev, Jansons, Muti (I have his second effort with Philadelphia, but critics prefer his earlier one with Philharmonia which was reissued recently as a part of the complete cycle).

    Exactly as illustrated.

I'm listening to the Nocturnes now. Rubinstein was so famous in my childhood, you didn't talk about listening to Chopin, but rather about Rubinstein playing Chopin. My mother really loved him.

There is no such thing as having too many versions of Tchaikovsky symphonies ...
