Grateful Dead album by album thread

wow Jackson, congrats and thanks to you for an amazing thread -- it's threads like this that make the Hoffman boards so special. THANK YOU!

I have found many times while reading this thread that i am so overwhelmed with thoughts and emotions, that I can't find anything concise to add, and I find it most of all at the end of the road. The GD is just a part of the fabric of me at this point -- I would not be the same human being without that experience.

I am so very thankful for all of the music Jerry made and shared with us, but his passing still stings to this day. it brought many things in to focus for me at the time. I can vividly remembering lying under my 68 VW bus adjusting the gaskets when my girlfriend came out to tell me the news. I can still feel the heat of the sun, still hear Truckin' on the radio as I turned it on to see if it was true. I remember crying for a man I never met, and thinking at the time how crazy and beautiful it was to have been touched so profoundly and deeply.

I really love the fragility and mortality of the end period songs. Days Between, Lazy River Road, Eternity, Liberty, and So Many Roads are my favorites. Liberty took on a new meaning when the came out with the video by Justin -- it was a nice feeling and summation. For all of the times that Jerry didn't seem present in the Dead during the final years, it was in that last batch of songs that he seemed to emerge and feel fully invested. in my mind, those are the halls he's still walking...

i do wish that a collection of those songs was released.

perhaps a bit off-topic, but at least I'll bump this thread up....

I found the Arista/Pair release of 'For the Faithful...' today and I now understand that this initial CD release omitted 'Oh It Ain't No Lie' from the 'Reckoning' live album (since all tracks wouldn't fit to single CD). Anyone have any idea how common this CD is?

I remember the vinyl version on Pair/Arista (same plates as the original Reckoning as far as I know), which seemed strange that one of their more loved lp's could go out of print.
I never saw this cd that uses similar art, without OBIANL. I'm guessing it was from the 74minute cd era, is the only thing that occurs to me. There was also a Reckoning cd w/o OBIANL so perhaps it's more an in-house Arista contractual issue. On any level For The Faithful would have to be a lot rarer. Maybe someone here might pop in that knows (or start a new thread!)

Oddly, the electric companion cd Dead Set had versions either missing Drums or Space depending on the pressing in the early 74min years, but nobody felt obligated to change the art or label.

I myself had a brief e-mail exchange with Phil Lesh well prior to the release of SO MANY ROADS where he confirmed he was trying to put together a "final" GD album of new songs. This was in about 1998. I sure would've liked to have seen all of the then new songs on a CD in their "best" versions, be they studio or live. Too bad it didn't happen. Some of Garcia's great final songs have better versions out there than what's been released, IMO.

Thanks Jackson. A Great Thread, as good as any book I've read on the subject.
A heads up to all. Go see Furthur. I saw the Dead over 50 times from 1972 on, and after just seeing Furthur at Hampton and Fairfax, I can gladly say that that my son and I just witnessed the two most wonderful shows of Grateful Dead music I've heard since Jerry left the planet.

 

I agree. This thread beats any books I have read on this venerable subject. I have decided to go back and archive each of your threads, Jackson. What a great and fun reference. I wish I knew someone in the publishing business.

 

Thanks very much for the kind words folks. It hadn't occured to me to archive these as it was living here. I've been competing with the wife, a 16yr old daughter, and 11yr old son for the two surviving laptops in the evenings (the 3rd one fried in the vicinity of '83-'86 with the picture sizing). I'd listen only to albums of that specific tour or year, take a couple lunch walks to remember and think about it, write for an evening and grab a few pics, touch up and post the next night then erase (due to very limited computer memory), and move to the next chapter (no looking back or thinking too far ahead). It was a fun exercise.
I'll get around to a postscript and side-project/add'l release appendix eventually. Thanks again, all.

 

Just wanted to chime in on how wonderful that once-and-future last album was/is. I think that in some form that may or may not exist yet it ranks with their classic albums. Maybe better than In the Dark, though I like that a lot.

APPENDIX;

After a short break and ponder, I’ve come to the conclusion that post-Grateful Dead projects should have their own narrative thread of some description (aka The Afterlife;Dead Style & The Season Of “What Now?”, or something similar). I’ve done a bit of reading the last couple months on the subject, and it could be at least mildly interesting, so I’ll post a new thread in due course if someone doesn’t get the urge in the meantime.

SO, as previously described, any following future posts will be merely a thinly veiled scam to keep this thread and pics intact for the entertainment of SHF newbies or curious.


This APPENDIX will consist of;


1) Grateful Dead member CONTRIBUTIONS to other artist’s albums and singles. Those good folks at deaddisc.com have compiled some lists and they’re fairly massive. We’ve only touched on some of these many contributions in this previous Grateful Dead thread, so this may be an eye-opener for some. If you’ve got questions or thoughts on any of them, please feel free to start a new thread on that album and query.


2) Grateful Dead or solo FURTHER ARCHIVE RELEASES that have occurred after the earlier finish of this thread. I’ll post pics and album details, where it fits chronologically in the thread, followed by a link to an existing SHF thread on the album. These threads often start as rumor and conjecture, followed by advance promo info, then ordering, postage, then the usual SHF critical analysis, so there’s no need to post anything further here. GD/Rhino release these things often enough that the thread should hang around for a good while.
