I like the Tennstedt, although Bernstein is my go-to for Mahler.

The Harnoncourt set of Bach Orchestral Suites from the same era as the Brandenburgs are among my most oft played classical albums of all time.

Is that K384? Oh, and what is the recording date on that, if you have a moment.

One of the greatest Pastorals, lukewarm Schubert 5. I re-discovered this symphony a couple days ago after hearing Blomstedt's truly reference version. Night and day. :righton:

In honor of Stuart's buying Tennstedt's Mahler box set, I'm going to listen to his M1 this morning.

    Love Bruggen's Beethoven. :righton:
A cross between the psychedelic sound of the Hanover Band and precision of Gardiner's troops.

Currently listening to. He must have made a deal with the devil before he recorded Three Movements from Petrouchka. It's one of the most virtuosic performances I have ever heard.

    is it Petrushka piano transcription?

No. Three Movements from Petrushka. Stravinsky wrote it for piano. It is one of those pieces where only the brave dare to go. Pollini just devours it.

When I tell people that Pollini is not well suited for Romantic piano music, that's the CD I should recommend to show what he is well suited to play. A stellar CD.

You are on the money. I really don't care for some of his romantic era stuff either.

A great D960 although I dig Radu Lupu more with that one.

IIndugging in piano bliss for hours tonight - Chopin at his finest....Evgeny Kissin - Live At Carnegie Hall 2005 ! Another side of his artistic persona is clearly audible here - no showman no experiments just Chopin's soul open for the world to see. I said it before and I say it again, especially after this oh so differnt set compared to his appearance in Poland last month - This is exactly how Chopin should be played today. It is all in the notes it only takes a true genious to reveal it and that is exactly what Evgeny did that night in NYC.. A must have recording - sound quality good enough to eat.
Nuff said - So far by a mile the best Chopin material I heard !

Not sure, as I have filed the set away in my upstairs music room. The set is indeed excellent. I would have preferred the VPO, i.e. a true Viennese tradition ...

Jay, This should be it for me as far as Mahler Symphonies are concerned. I will have close to 3 Mahler cycles in 2 weeks. Not bad for someone who is not quite a big fan of Mahler ...
