Just now playing for the first time:

Jordi Savall & Les Nations on AliaVox - VIVALDI: LA VIOLA DA GAMBA IN CONCERTO.

These are amongst Vivaldi's best compositions, beautifully recorded. No regrets about purchasing this one.

I think it is decent but really is not anything close to the best out there. Herreweghe's second version may deserve that accolade. I am waiting for the following set to be re-issued. I have so far been very impressed with Jos Van Veldhoven and his Netherlands Bach Society after having purchased his Christmas Oratorio, Mass in B and SJP.

    Dudamel in New York

Soooo...did any of our peeps up east check out the world's hottest conductor on his first visit to NY with LA Phil? I saw this program last October as part of Gustavo's inaugural weekend in Disney Hall. Fantastic, but I'm not sure how Dudamel's sound would travel in that awful Avery Fisher Hall. As regards Mr. Kozinn's review -- 'You could quibble with interpretive turns of all sorts', oh f-off -- I like 'hyperturbulent' finales to Mahler 1, absolutely.

    Looks nice!

Have you heard Kraus's Mozart sonatas?

Yes, I have the stereo recordings on RCA Red Seal and the mono on Music & Arts. And the complete violin sonatas with Boskovsky, too.

Me too, though the stereo recordings are on SONY, not RCA. :)

I think both sets have their strengths. I'm glad I got them both.

I think RCA and Sony Music are now the same corporate entity since Sony Music merged with BMG, which owned the RCA label a few years back ...

    Jewish violin masters

    Now playing:
    • Le Violon en Fête Vol. 2 [Tahra 2009, Remastering: Charles Eddi, excellent sound, both performances are killers, esp. the Brahms]
-Brahms: Violin Concerto, Op. 77 - Nathan Milstein; Herbert von Karajan/Lucerne Festival Orchestra (recorded live 8/17/57 at Lucerne Festival)
-Sibelius: Violin Concerto, Op. 47 - Bronislaw Gimpel; Eugen Jochum/Berlin Philharmonic (recorded live 4/21-22/56 in the Konzertsaal der Hochschule für Musik of Berlin, a rare recording of Jochum conducting Sibelius)

A number of Karajan's Decca recordings made in the late 50's that were remastered as Decca Legends a few years ago have excellent SQ. I have a few of these Decca Legends in my collection ...

There's something about the Mengleberg performance of the St. Matthew Passion that moves me in ways that a more historically informed performance does not. I know Mengleberg's wartime Palm Sunday performance is creaky with Victorian anachronisms but there is something about the time and place of this performance that alters the context of Bach's masterwork, making its music even darker than usual.

I find that the Saint Matthew Passion is a piece that must be heard "live" to fully appreciate, much like Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. There are sounds in these pieces that don't seem to get through the microphone.

I heard Helmuth Rilling conduct the Mass in B Minor last fall at USC. He had pro singers, including soprano Jessica Rivera, in front of an orchestra of Thornton School students. Even though the vocalists were not extraordinary, Rilling's command of the piece was both unflagging and transcendent. In other words, I know what you mean.

I don't know. I mainly have them as hi-rez downloads (which are pricey). The only SACD I have was pretty cheap at jpc.de when I got it.

But coopmv seems to get them at MDT for reasonable prices. You can get many at amazon as well.

I bought this set a few months ago, a very refreshing performance. But I am addictive to Handel Messiah and have over 20 versions between my CD's, LP's, open-reels, DVD's and VHS's ...
