Just a reminder, this thread (and the 11 that have preceded it) is for all things classical music. Post what you're listening to, what recordings you recommend, recent purchases, concerts, discuss works, composers, etc.

Also, beginners are welcome. Feel free to post any questions that you may have. This includes requests for recommendations for particular works/composers, etc.

I love those vocal recital CDs. I have many that I treasure, yet I don't often reach for them for some reason.

It took me a long time to get into classical vocal music, but now I really enjoy it.

    Beethoven: Piano Concertos 1&2
Wilhelm Kempff (pno) B.P.O. Ferdinand Leitner (Cond)
DG Galleria (Well you guessed it :D !) 419 856-2
An early addition to my cd collection I bought all three discs upon issue loving these performances from the lp era using Kempff's own Cadenzas.
The 1962 recording has a very wide dynamic range.

    Great works, Candy!

Have you heard Kempff's mono recordings of those works? They are available in this box budget price from third party amazon sellers.

I enjoy most recordings by the Purcell Quartet, whose members were alumni of the Academy of Ancient Music from the Chrstopher Hogwood's era. :righton:

It has an incredible Islamey on it which is considered on the the most difficult piano pieces in existence. The rest is very good.

He is also a great conductor. Spotty, but great nonetheless.

Oh, I discovered it a couple of months ago.
I walked into a local store, a small mom&pop kind of store (uh, can you say that in English? Help me out, please!) asking for some Harnoncourt, and the owner went like "oh, no, no, Harnoncourt is bad for you, he's an ugly tone deaf old man, leave that stuff alone".
"Uh, but I like his Brandeburg... not PERFECT at all, but I find it more enjoyable than, say, the far more polished Marriner"
"Ah, so you have a thing for historical performance?"
    "I guess."

He walked in the back of the store and came out with that album.

    "Then listen to this stuff."

    ...Boom!

In the end I refused to buy yet one more version of Brandeburg (I already own three), for fear that my fiancee or mom could as well hire a mafioso killer or kill me themselves.

But I'm still having wet dreams over it, and I know it's just a matter of time.

    Oh, dear.
If I still have some degree of contact with reality I think I've seen in in the used shelf of my local CD store a couple of weeks ago.
The cover art struck me for being so outlandish, and... ehr, I didn't care to read the title and I thought it was some avantgarde jazz thing.
I donì't want to feed a false hope, but I think there's a chance I'll stop by next week, do you want me to check if it's still there?

Don't know anything about Handel's Theodora or this particular version (though what I think about Harnoncourt you can read above)... care to elaborate?
My knowledge of Handel is sadly pretty much confined to his orchestral work, as in water music, coronation, hymns...
