Keeping the lense clean seems to help a lot of Sony SACD players. Sometimes, this requires you to open up the player to get at the lense with compressed air. They also make lense cleaning discs.

 

His Rach concertos are superb! As is his Totentanz.

Fairly common from what I read at the time. It seemed like the much less expensive 775s (not to be confused with the later generation 755s) actually did better.

 

Absolutely. Rachmaninoff 1 is on the 2nd side of the aforementioned LP and it is magnificent.

 

Have you heard his Rach 2 and 3 as well?

It took me half a year, but this weekend I finally got through the complete studio recordings of Maria Callas (69 discs worth).

 

...And what's about the overall conclusion, John? I have had some plans to buy this huge brick of her heritage (I have some 'public domain' live 5CD set of hers), but haven't decided yet. In two words (or a bit more, after having a nice mid-week weekend with my relatives from Moscow ) - I adore her as a woman person but can hardly stand some of her... somewhat... noisy parts.

 

Well, the deterioration in her voice is quite evident - I listened in chronological order (as presented), so the last month has not been so much fun.

But there was much to appreciate in the first half and on occasions thereafter.

I speak as someone who enjoys, but does not adore, opera. And one of the reasons I bought the set was to complete my library of Italian opera in one fell swoop at a price that was irresistable.

EDIT - Let me modify my statement about opera. I love Mozart's opera. I consider The Marriage of Figaro to be one of very few large scale works of art that borders on perfection. I rank it with Michaelangelo's David.

I think we all should listen to other people's advice, as they say in Naples, nisciuni nasce imparato, nobody is born erudite.

Generally speaking, if you told me a classical recording is absolute poo because of x and y, I'd play it listening out for those particular faults, and I'd likely end up agreeing with you.
If nobody told me to pay attention to x and y, my taste wouldn't evolve, and I'd still be listening to the crap music I used to like when I was 13

Oh, my copy shares shelf real estate with the likes of maudelin and dark Bauhaus, Siouxsie and Velvet Underground, so it's in good company
