Fifth still has Elton Dean, so it sounds similar to the previous two albums, and has some material they had played live and on BBC broadcasts with Wyatt.

With Six, Karl Jenkins replaces Dean, which makes for a significant change.

Anyone know if the Hux reissue of the BBC Heavy Friends recordings improves the sound any over the Windsong? (I know it has an extra 6 minutes tagged on at the end, but that's really not enough of an incentive to buy it)

IMHO, skip Five and go straight to Six, the best post-Wyatt album.

Trivia Note: "Six" is the best-selling Soft Machine album.

Question for you guys. I have the "Big Beat" label two-fer CD of the first two Soft Machine albums. As for the two recent UK Universal Music CD's, are they an audible improvement over the two-fer?(and no, I don't need the new discs for the Polydor debut single "Love Makes Sweet Music" b/w Feelin, Reelin, Squeelin", since I've got that on the 2-CD "Out-Bloody-Rageous" set)

Much to my amazement, I'm REALLY loving the frilly heck out of the new DVD on Cuneiform. Pretty wary about picking it up, as the post-Wyatt years are pretty hit and miss (and I avoid the Harvest/EMI years like the plague), but this one's a home run. It's the '7' band, but playing primarily the material from '6', with a couple of added guests (including Gary Boyle, who also had me worried as I have bad memories of buying his 'The Dancer' album back in the 70s and REALLY hating it, but here he doesn't seem too bad) Both the picture and sound are much better than Voicepint's 1970 disc. Sure, I feel like I'm betraying Wyatt every time I play it, but ya gotta give in to weakness every so often, right?

I'm planning on putting an order in at waysidemusic.com in the near future and I think I'll probably get this one. I know what you mean about the no Wyatt thing, though.

Here's something for the "if you don't already have it, you need it" category:

    SOFT MOUNTAIN (Hux)

Hugh Hopper, Elton Dean, Tatsuya Yoshida & Hoppy Kamiyama
    http://www.huxrecords.com/cdsales84.htm

Only partially Soft Machine-sounding (and even less Ruins-sounding) but still a worthwhile workout nonetheless. Hopper pretty much dominates the proceedings, as well he should.

    Sounds interesting , i've only
recently heard Hugh's 1984 , and some of the Soft Head
    and Soft Heap recordings .

Sax Ruins is pretty insane stuff !

As I am feeling uncharacteristically sharey today: I cannot speak to "2," but the recent reissue of "1" has some ever-so-slight NR applied and (more irritatingly) is narrowed somewhat. I don't think you need it if you already have another edition.

Hadn't heard about a sale of the Dutch 45, can confirm that this recently sold for considerably more. One of the two or three scarcest 60's Japanese releases.

One of my fave bands, I've been thrilled with all the Cuneiform & other label releases of the past few years, the added dimension these bring to an appreciation of the the '69 - 71 era is really something. HH was a MONSTER bass player!!!!

Though this era will always be my fave:

I've never seen that promo picture before! Thanks for posting that.
I would love to own that single as those two songs are awesome.
If it weren't for the Triple Echo set, I don't know if I ever would have been able to hear them.

You're so right about Hugh. Hard to believe it's already been over a year since his passing:(.

Japanese original. Not certain from when, though. Late 60's being my guess, perhaps 1969?
