BTW, this twofer was very well recorded - the harpsichord performance comes across crisp and very well-miked, which I did not expect from a budget label like Naxos ...

  3. Walter Trampler / Ronald Turini - Paul Hindemith: Sonata for viola and piano; Sonata, Opus 11, no. 4. (1939)
RCA Red Seal - RCA Canada - LSC-3012

Hard to find info on this performace. After a couple of searches I finally found it in the on-line Canadian Encyclopedia under Turini, Ronald. Says the LP was released in 1967.

Very interesting muisc. I've never heard this Hindemith composition before. Found the LP for $1.99 in a recent thrift store, in the "table scraps" section. Some of you may remember my story in the last thread.

    That's what George says too!
    Can't wait to hear it.

My recent listening of SATIE Early Piano Work was simply awesome!
Just a real joy and soooo relaxing to listen to.
I'm gonna hafta rank it up there with my John Field Nocturnes by O'conor as my favorite Solo Piano work thus far.
    Thanx Toby!! :righton:

I will need to do some A-B listening to this SACD by Mutter. I believe this new version by Mullova may be better ...

The Beecham LP—first U.S. release was on the budget Seraphim imprint—is just "Ok". You might be better off with the CDs. The performance is very special—apparently it was a tape of Beecham's Rehearsal of Ein Heldenleben in preparation for the real thing, Beecham dies just before the scheduled recording.

I should also mention this fantastic set of the complete orchestral music of Richard Strauss with Rudolf Kempe leading the Dresden Staatskapelle:

It's been reissued on Brilliant Classics, but there doesn't seem to be any price advantage over the EMI box.

I understand Chopin got much inspiration from John Field. I need to get John Field Nocturnes for my collection ...

I have 2 separate London recordings for the same works on your Philips twofer.

Is George on vacation? Haven't seen him online today at all ...

  18. Just picked up these two early CD releases on my trip to Canada:

    1. Beethoven - Symphony No. 9 "Choral" (Christoph von Dohnányi, The Cleveland Orchestra & Chorus)
    Telarc, Made in Japan

    2. George Frederic Handel - Water Music (Trevor Pinnock, The English Concert)
Archiv Produktion, Made in West Germany
(funny to read his name that way, since it is "Georg Friedrich Händel" in German)

Not sure if these are considered good performances.

I have both CD's. The Water Music by the English Concert/Trevor Pinnock is first-rate even after almost 30 years. The B9 by Dohnanyi and Cleveland is respectable ...

Does George actually like this twofer?

  24. That's what I thought. The Beethoven No. 9 sounds a little more "laid back", less powerful than for example the Karajan version from the 60's. Not sure if these early "Made in Japan" Telarc CD's are hard to find and desireable. It sounds very nice for sure.

IIRC, he's not a fan of De Leeuw's slow tempos (this is De Leeuw at his slowest) and prefers Rogè or Thibaudet.

I'm the other way around: love De Leeuw's epic, monumental, ethereal playing, but I'm not that impressed by Rogè - I suspect it's both a matter of personal preferences as well as imprinting.

Will check out Thibaudet sooner or later.

But, George is the guy who got both me and Jim hooked on Satie, hence we love him. Even if he's eeevil.
