I'd say Claudio Arrau is about 55% to 65% cocoa with traces of orange and cherry.

As far as I can see no one has mentioned any harpsichord versions of Das wohltemperierte Clavier yet. I used to prefer piano versions years ago (I liked Angela Hewitt's first recording), but I don't listen to those anymore, the harpsichord has taken over :) Kenneth Gilbert's version (DG) is my current favourite.

I've got Davitt Moroney's Harmonia Mundi set, nice sound and performances. There are other harpsichord sets I also like, including Leonhardt's DHM recording.

I have always found Leonhardt's harpsichord playing a bit stiff, if that is the right word for it. I do have many Leonhardt's recordings between CD's and LP's since he is such an important keyboard artist when it comes to baroque, which is my favorite period in classical music ...

I suggest starting with the Live in Japan CD. As far as I know, it's only available here:

That's the right word for it, but that quality varies to a remarkable degree. Although there's a touch of the sewing-machine school in his second set of the WTC, there's a lot of fine conceptions and realizations in that version of the 48. What I found rather a pleasant surprise was his much more relaxed interpretations of music of the Couperin Family on Phillips.

I recall liking the Christiane Jaccottet set of the WTC as well.

    G'day,

Got this in a yard sale yesterday, and playing it now and quite enjoying it:

Arthur Rubinstein - "The Chopin Collection: The Nocturnes" -- I have some other recordings of the Nocturnes by Barenboim and others but I think on first listen this is my favourite.

I might seek out some more of Rubinstein's Chopin works ... there's further editions in the "Chopin Collection" on RCA or there's an 11CD box available; not sure if it's culled from the same series.

If that set you have already is in stereo, the box contains the same Nocturne performances.

rest assured it's a classic. you may find other performances on the same plane, but arguably none would be finer (although some may prefer others). i haven't heard the barenboim, and certainly think he's an amazing artist, but i'd have a hard time believing his performances of this repertoire would be held in the same continual high regard as the rubenstein performances have been (and years after his death, too).

DG frankly disgusts me nowadays much of the time. They were once perhaps the greatest of all classical labels, and now come across as often as not soft-core porn peddlers. If I see one more young hottie violinist appearing under "the yellow label" and marketed as some little sexpot, I could :hurl:

Then again, they still have Pollini, and Giuliano Carmignola, and Maria Joao Pires, and Thomas Quasthoff, and a few others of extraordinary integrity, and when I think of them, I calm down a bit. Still, they don't seem to get the same marketing push that the little hotties do.

No doubt. In many ways I like to read critics and chose stuff when it gets a rave revue, BUT when i really like an album and a well respected critic doesn't no question which opinion is of more weight for me...
Googlng formore infoon that Vivaldi Cd i checked it won the record of the month ECHO in 12 / 2009 and is highly regarded for it's unusual different hip approach...http://blog.codaex.de/2010/02/ensemble-explorations-roel-dieltiens-antonio-vivaldi-cello-sonatas/

Funny thing that out of all composers Brahms is the one I get the least, followed by Mahler...

The one exception is that brown twofer on DG by Leo Bernstein

There is that novel and film called "Lieben sie Brahms" (Do You Love Brahms) and I find it hard to say yes...

That twofer is actually by HvK, but he looks a bit lik Leo B here..:)

That is the only Brahms i can think of I like...

    I love HvK's Brahms from the 60s.

    I also love Barbirolli's Brahms.

I am not sure when this set was recorded exactly, but it sounds lovely, just spinning it atm. and the music is wonderful, not depressing at all. cover says something about P 1978 and Bit Image Processing for 'added presence and brilliance plus greater spatial definition'

So who wins that WTC race = Rosalyn Tureck maybe and what about Pollini ?

I never went beyond Leonhardt's WTC (DHM). I recently made the upgrade step and bought the SACD from Japan and I love it. I ll check Gilbert also.

The vast majority of my own Chopin discs are by Rubinstein, including the concertos and nocturnes. One exception that comes to mind is my preludes disc by Thibaudet (highly reviewed upon release) on Denon from 1987.

Barbirolli is with Vienna I think... Eccentric not middle of the road view.

I recommend Toscanini's cycle from London in 52 and Walter's mono cycle in NY. Also Mengleberg's various recs in Amsterdam (these were cheaply reissued by Naxos).

For modern sounding complete cycles I would go with Klemperer (EMI), Guilini (DG), Bohm (DG). Levine also shone in Brahms (RCA, DG). Chailly should have tried these ones later in his career because his cycle in Amsterdam is not mature, judging from his later concerts. Haitink did a fine early cycle there and then another one in Boston and one more in London/LSO.

Furtwaengler's Brahms 1st from Hamburg on 27 oct 51 is the for me the absolute summit of any recorded Brahms, together with a live 3rd with Georges Pretre (!) from Berlin 3 years ago that circulates.

Appealing to a younger crowd. You know, I really don’t mind if they make classical music appear a little more hip and sexier. Personally, I’ve always hated that they used for decades the big yellow “Deutsche Grammophon” picture frame covering 1/3 of the album cover as an excuse for creating any interesting or creative graphics. The newer graphics are much more inventive.

i love the "old" DG graphics & collect the LPs as much for the look as for
the music.maybe it's because a couple of friends had a few back in the early
70s & they just reeked of "class" to me.such wonderful objects...
