I own the disc of quartets 14 and 15 from that set. I got it prior to getting the complete set to supplement the earlier incomplete one on Chandos. I see that they proudly display the No Noise Remastering credit in the notes. On the reissue, there doesn't seem to be any mastering information, though it seems unlikely that they would have remastered it again. I just compared the two and found out that my CD from the box is defective. :realmad:

Oh well, I have the older one to listen to.

Haven't heard that Furtwangler. My first exposure to Furtwangler was the horrific Brahms#2 on Decca.

What no mention of Beecham,Ansermet,or Stokowski?

Talking about Sir Thomas Beecham, I love his Schubert album with symphonies 3, 5 and 6 (EMI).

You ain't kiddin' - great disc. Very appealing from the get-go; loved it the first time I heard it.

Another fine Beecham album is the 2CD-set with various Delius compositions (EMI).

I bought this recording on Onyx a few months ago. I have always liked Stephen Kovacevich ...

IMO, is Julia Fischer better than Hilary Hahn?

I’m not sure of your question (if there really is one). Are you asking for my opinion or yours?

IMO, HH has a little more technical prowess (mostly speed) and Julia Fischer has a better tone. Depending on the piece, either one can excel over the other.

There are some very good violinists around today IMO. I would put Leonidas Kavakos, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Christian Tetzlaff in that category. These are artists I've seen live and was extremely impressed by. I would also like coop pick Mullova or Mutter over Julia F. or Hilary H. To be fair to Julia Fischer, I've never seen her live, and I don't have the PentaTone discs, some of which IIRC are highly regarded. The Bach CD though frankly sounded to me like something any orchestra's principal could have gotten done.

If anyone is interested in period performances on the violin, and/or Vivaldi, check out Giuliano Carmignola, if you haven't already. He is phenomenal.

EDIT: Vadim Repin. Can't believe I forgot him. He's the best of his generation IMO.

    Howdy, neighbor!

It's been remarked here more than once before that the best performances and the best sonic quality almost never coexist.

[Note to those who don't live in our area: the Meyerhoff is the home hall of the Baltimore Sym. Or. in Baltimore, Maryland; the or. has a second "home" at the Strathmore Arts Center in Rockville, Maryland, which is in the DC suburbs.]

    Morning folks!

FWIW, I keep my classical and non-classical discussions separate. I don't see any value in favoring one over the other. I just enjoy both and try to let others enjoy what they enjoy, whatever that might be.

    Morning, George!

Actually, I can play drums in a punk band and leave my old man's moral at home. Punks pay me, I pay for classics, could it be easier? :goodie:

I have to note that Decca Tree has not been invented, or not been used at least, at the time of the session. TBW it was a monaural recording and you don't need Decca tree.
BTW the poor engineer was Kenneth Wilkie. And the producer was IIRC Victor Olof.

What's the best Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique on CD? (considering both sound and performance?)

    Gardiner. :righton:

Funny, that's not one I would have picked. I've never been a Gardiner fan, I find his interpretations often too emphatically "authentic", to my ears they often lack spontaneity. I had more or less the same problem with Christopher Hogwood and his Academy of Ancient Music's "authenticity", thirty years or so ago.

To be honest I can't mention an alternative, there's no performance of the Symfonie fantastique I have ever totally liked.

Munch (SACD), Paray (SACD), Barenboim (SONY) or Dutoit (Decca)
