Now playing CD15, the last CD from this set for a first listen. What a great set on fortepiano performance!

  2. I am listening to the first disc from this 5-disc set of Tchaikovsky symphonies conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The recordings are from 1977/1978.

This was a good deal (I thought) at under 12 GBP from amazon.co.uk (comes out to under $22 shipped to the U.S.). I think it is out of print in the U.S., or at least a lot more expensive. The remastering apparently is from 1995, but this set shows a copyright date of 2008.

The packaging is also decent. A rather sturdy box, 40 page booklet with good information and the CD's come in individual cardboard sleeves which are plenty of big to get the discs out easily.

This is the best 9th ever IMHO. Giulini with the Chicago Sym Orchestra.

This is one of the greatest Tchaikovsky symphony set, along with the Mehta and LA band's set which is always underrated or neglected by people.

  7. I like it a lot so far, nice playing, maybe a little more laid back and slower as some others, which suits the music well, I think.

Here's what I think of the other forums/groups that I visit out there (links to each are provided, just click on the underlined name):

    1. Good Music Guide - Friendly and knowledgeable posters who post often. It's easily my favorite Classical forum. I've met several of the members personally, one of whom, Karl Henning, is an active composer. The Non Classical Music listening thread is very good too. A few of the members here show up there fairly regularly. Overall, people are mostly civil. I definitely suggest becoming a member.

    2. Classical Music Guide - People here are very civil, knowledgeable and helpful, but unfortunately there's not a lot of traffic.

    3. RMCR - A google group where you need a three-ply flameproof suit. (I am not kidding) Plus, they get a lot of Spam and there's no moderation at all. However, there are knowledgeable people there and there's a lot of traffic. I see a few members from here over there.

    4. Classical Recordings - A Yahoo group that grew out of members of RMCR who were frustrated with the lack of respect posters got on RMCR. As a result, they strongly emphasize being civil to your fellow posters. They are very knowledgeable and the group gets moderate traffic. The downside is the clumsy interface.

There are other Yahoo groups that specialize in all kinds of areas of classical music, like Pianophiles, Great Pianists, Sviatoslav Richter, Beethoven Sonatas, etc. These people tend to be very knowledgable and civil. Some of the most respected members of the classical music recording community post there, people like Gregor Benko and Farhan Malik.

I imagine this recording has been remastered and is still available?

Do you mean the 9th on a SACD in general or some particular recording? Personally, after hearing some better redbook productions/remasterings (as some Warner's discs from 90's and the DSD Mahler cycle in the Bernstein box) and some so-so SACDs I've become even more hungry for better performances rather than a better medium.

Of course, I don't ignore some obvious SACD choices, esp. when they are reasonably priced (i.e. are not much more expensive than their redbook counterparts), but somehow redbooks surprised me more often lately - I mean, in a positive way.

Dated? I'd not particularly think so. Rather, TBW it is not a great recording like other ones on Living Stereo SACD. It is one of the worst Mohr/Layton outputs.

I'd recommend the Jarvi SACD on TELARC or the Ivan Fischer SACD on Philips but it's oop.

The performance was actually pretty good considering how young she is. She is from Georgia, the former Soviet Republic and the former Soviet Union produced many outstanding pianists ...
