Finest may be Khatia Buniatishvili, 23 years-old and born in Tbilisi. Recently signed to Sony Classical, debut CD coming next year. What I have heard is very impressive.

RCO and BPO simply outclass any American symphony orchestras IMO, with VPO not far behind ...

On the whole I'd probably agree, but I wouldn't say it's true across the board. For example, I don't think I'd take any of them over the NYPO in Mahler. I also heard the Philadelphia Orchestra last week in Rachmaninov's Second Symphony; I doubt there's another orchestra in the West that outplays the Fabulous Philadelphians in that piece.

Rachmaninoff had a major connection with the PO, though that was more than seventy years ago. CSO probably still retains its number one spot among the American orchestras ...

I have this one by the Tallis Scholars as well. I already have close to all the recordings ever made by the Tallis Scholars ...

Re American orchestras v. European orchestras

I've only seen one European orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and it was definitely an ear-opening experience. I loved what I heard. However, making comparison judgments based on recordings alone is a very iffy proposition, IMO.

I attended concerts given by the English Concert/Trevor Pinnock, English Baroque Soloists/John Eliot Gardiner and ASMIF/Iona Brown. Believe me, there are no baroque ensembles in the US that even come close. One concert that I could have attended but did not and live to regret much was the last concert given by Karajan in the US in early 89, just a few short months before his death. Had I enjoyed Bruckner 8th as much back then, I would have gone to the concert in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I did not like Bruckner then ... :sigh:

Baroque ensembles really don't fly in the USA, never have. Too limited an audience. Major symphonic orchestras is what I was referring to. I'd put the Met Orchestra with Levine at the helm against any comers in Wagner, for instance. CSO with Boulez in Stravinsky.

Philharmonia Baroque from Berkeley/S.F. is wonderful, you should try their recording of Corelli's Opus six, one of my favorite recordings.

Pretty littlr Susie, she's just half grown, jumps on a man like a dog on a bone . . .

Shira Kammen, fiddle specialist of various Early early music [medieval] ensembles, has performed Appalachian fiddle tunes, rather well at that.
