Ok guys, in a few hours I'll be sitting in there:

That's the Berliner Philharmonie. A few months ago I was at our Botanical Garden and there was a young and pretty woman giving away free classical CDs to those who could answer this question: "What Beethoven symphony discribes life in the countryside?" I might not be an expert on classical music, but I know my Beethoven symphonies. So I told her it's the 6th/Pastorale and got a CD with Brahm's 4th and Strauss' Alpensymphonie. And then she talked me into buying 3 tickets for concerts at the Berliner Philharmonie with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin performing, for 10 Euros each. These are so-called Casual Concerts, meaning they don't expect you to dress up and the orchestra won't as well. There will also be an introduction to the pieces being played. In short, it's aimed at classical "beginners". I think that's a great concept and I'm very curious about tonight.

The pieces being performed will be Maurice Ravel's "Rapsodie espagnole" and something called "Osiris" by Matthias Pintscher, who is also the conductor tonight. So it's going to be rather "modern". I will let you guys know how I liked it.

BTW, this is what the Berliner Philharmonie looks like from the outside:

Many great interpretations are all around.
Karajan, Knappertsbusch, Furtwaengler, Solti just to name a few.

I have only heard some excerpts of Scarlatti and Tchaikovsky, but I found them interesting and would put Sudbin on my 'watch' list.

My understanding is HvK provided some input in the architectural and acoustical designs of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Hall ...

Well, Half Price Books is having a 20% off sale on Black Friday from 7 am to 10 am. Some stores have a better classical selection than others. I'm really pleased with the Furtwanlger set I picked up. There was a 10-Disc Mahler set (appeared to be all German recordings) that also caught my eye. Might have to go back for that.

The 40% discount at my local Borders store will only get me some books since its classical section is pretty decimated ...

Very cool. I hope you enjoyed the show and we expect a full report! :righton:

I’ve enjoyed some of Abbado’s live DVDs from there.

Noticed any area inside the concert hall that commemorates the tenure of Furtwangler and Karajan?

I don't think there's anything in the concert halls. But I think there are busts of them in the foyer.
