I listened to the first disc of the Oistrakh box. The Beethoven Archduke was the most leisurely, relaxed performance I've heard of that work. It surprised me, but it worked.

Clearly I have a steep learning curve ahead regarding Brahms' chamber music. The sextet does sound lovely. On my list. Any suggestions?

That Hollywood/Aller opus 34 is a bit rich for my blood. I'm thinking about the Pollini/Italianos remaster. I did not see the Eschenbach/Frantz 34b, but did find the Ax/Bronfman also with the Haydn variations which sounds interesting. Speaking of the Haydn piece, my local station had the Barenboim/Chicago recording on the other day. I took time out from work to really listen to this lush and very legato rendition. Sounded like no wind player came up for air during the entire theme statement. I enjoyed the whole piece very much.

That same station has the Academic Festival Overture in high rotation. I find the music bland, no matter who I've heard play it. However, I do not know what the "deliciously irreverent jokes in all classical music" is.

Anybody order the Heifetz complete original jacket box? 103 CD's. That is huge! Bigger than any of the other artists' original-jacket boxes (Horowitz, Gould).

I did see that box. Looks like a better way to go other than to piece together all those works separately. I am going to have to put a stop to ordering until I get the credit card balance down. Thanks.

Speaking of credit card balances, my Schubert quintet in C is on its way. Can't wait to hear it. Again, thanks.

A couple years ago I checked this out of our local library:

On the CD's back was a picture similar to the above interior shot. The librarian told me that in her days as a student in Berlin, she used to go to the concerts often. When the bleacher seats directly behind the orchestra were not needed for a concert, they offered those to students for cheap. I think she noticed my face turning green with envy.:(

I think Hildegard von Bingen would have preferred to be called a lady, especially since she was of noble descent and abbess of her convent.

I was being flippant; no offense was meant.
Please note I was not referring to the great Hildegard. She's far too old to be called a "girl."

The Gilels/Jochum Brahms Second Piano Concerto is the greatest recording of that piece. Nothing else can beat it.

My favorite performance is by Pasquier et al on Harmonia Mundi, but it is oop now.

It seems very interesting that French (used to?) seem to dislike music of Brahms traditionally, judging from the fact that only a handful(!) recordings of Brahms repertoire were made by French orchestras till 1980s, while many chamber and instrumental pieces by Brahms were recorded by French musicians.

Could French members tell me why French generally so dislike(d) Brahms?
