The rear art says 24 bit, but I am wondering how they fit (and play) on a regular CD. CD-Rs, for example, only hold around 800 MB.

    *ahem*

    Allow me.

It's just marketing BS. What it probably means is that the album was recorded/mastered using 24-bit PCM before being converted to (supposedly) 20-bit HDCD.

Now, as for the size of the rip, that's kind of a mystery. I'm not sure how other rippers or formats handle it, but when I rip an HDCD in dbpoweramp, I can either rip it in 16 bit and then use a decoder program to play it OR I can rip it in 24 bit with the decoding done already. Doing the later does indeed lead to higher file sizes.

Just got the three volumes of Bagatelles and Dances by Jeno Jando on Naxos a couple of weeks ago. Some creative LvB on those discs, played well by Jando. Very enjoyable.

Me too—especially Op. 126. Schnabel nails them, Gould turns in an ultra-slow-motion performance that works anyway.

You are correct, sir—the Fantasy is second tier Beethoven, below The Missa Solemnis, above Wellington's Victory.

there's also a 'companion' video documentary that monsaingeon did called "richter: the enigma". i noticed that a certain youtube place seemed to have it... well worth watching for the historic footage. i never got to see richter in the flesh, but in some of the clips he seems to tower over the piano. i remember thinking at one point that it looked like he was playing a toy piano!

If you click on the link in the above thread, you will see that Sony has today released new versions of the Richter/Leinsdorf Brahms 2d and the Szell recording of Mozart's 35th and 40th (both discussed here recently). There are some other interesting choices as well.

It's not clear to me whether some or all of these are remasterings.

I've only gotten 1/3. The Jacqueline De Pre box set arrived today. Still no Mahler/Rattle and Mozart/Gieseking (which are now listed at much higher prices, though still marked "Out of Stock, Back-Order").

All 5 of my shipments of in-stock product have arrived. I live 45 minutes from ImportCDs warehouse in Irvine, but a couple still took a full calendar week to arrive, fyi Media Mail is used to send. Could be up to two weeks during holiday season for these to get across the continent. Evan, when did you order the Callas box? When I ordered it was out-of-stock. Are they filling previously OOS orders? Hmmm... PS. My Jochum Bruckner box did not have a booklet. Sent back for exchange.

    1. Yeah, I knew they sent by Media Mail. It could be Christmas week before I have these in my hands.
