I enjoy that one though...maybe its the music itself with the ensemble isnt a good match.

Fretwork's great. I think they simply were having an off day. Compare the sonorities of the two discs—the engineers certainly had a better time of it with Alio Modo than with Art of Fugue.

It's a package containing an older recording of "Art of Fugue" with a more recent "Musical Offering." I think the box came out about five years ago. Savall leads a mixed ensemble of strings—mostly viols—and woodwinds in his realization of Der Kunst der Fuge. It's slower, more graceful and much better recorded than Fretwork's version.

no, but it is a repackaging of the two separate discs.

Amazon's price now beats ImportCD's by almost $3 since it provides free shipping. This set is looking very interesting ... :righton:

When I am at work the time slows to a crawl. When I am not, it flies!

Got to get to bed. Goodnight, Classical mavens!

    Say What?

It's all about spelling on threads such as this, but when I meet the occasional classical music lover in the flesh I have some trepidation with the correct pronunciation of certain names. (I recall some question earlier about "Boulez.") Here are a few I need some input on:

    Penderecki

    Celibidache

    Chailly

    Moracec

    Perahia

    Gekić

    Takács

    I guess it "Depends."

Penderecki—I've heard Pen der ek EEE with the emphasis on EEE.

Celibidache—Various pronounciations/mispronounciations. Mine is CHELL a ba da CHE, but I've heard others.

    Chailly—ditto, I say Chai EEE.

For G-d's sake—somebody correct me before I embarrass myself in public!

Moracec— It's Moravec, Ivan and I've always heard it as More a VEK

My nomination for prettiest piano tone, all-time.

Perahia— Sounds just like the social ones.

Gekić—Who? Is this what Horton hears?

    Takács—I've heard Tock OCSH, mostly.

    Fantastic Quartet.

BTW—It's Pin-SHAUN for all you Pyn-Heads and Zombie Freaks out there who might be grazing on the interwebs right about now.

Sergiu Celibidache - the Romanian pronunciation is ˈserd͡ʒju t͡ʃelibiˈdake

    Chailly - ʃɑ.i

I am fairly certain about the following, in other words, when I say these names I never feel uncertain and say them with authority like I know what the hell I'm talking about!!

I am more comfortable with this pronunciation than the one that stressed CHAY at the end.

The "dache" at the end of Celibidache is pronounced "dah-ke", the "ch" is a "k" here.
