Did you get any EMI boxes during the ImportCDs blow-out?

    Viotti chamber music

There are samples of the album streaming on Amazon. It is not challenging, complex music, just some relatively simple melodies for flute and piano. What you hear is what you get.

I love the flute sonatas by Bach. I have the 2 Naxos CDs of these works.

No, I did not. I already have many of the EMI box sets and was not actively looking for more.

    Tonight...

    Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
    Dukas: The Sorcerer's Apprentice
    Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain

    The Philadelphia Orchestra
    Eugene Ormandy

In response to drh's query in thread #17 about the use of the piano to supplement the chimes (or gongs if you will) in the finale, I found this:

    http://www.classicalnotes.net/classics/berliozsym.html

I have not heard the recordings cited above, but I can tell you that of my four versions of this piece, the above Ormandy sounds like it may be the closest to Berlioz's wishes regarding the bells. (The others are Dutoit/Montreal, Abbado/Chicago, and Davis/Concertgebouw.) While Ormandy doesn't double the chimes with a piano, his bells are suitably ominous. It almost sounds like he pressed into service that famous cracked bell in his town.:)

I'm not ready to claim that the Ormandy is the "rip-snorting" performance sought, but his tempi are faster than any of the other ones I have, for what that's worth. (Maybe that's why they had room for two other works on that disc.) Also, those Ormandy era strings are gorgeous.

    Absolutely!
She makes a great Violin partner to Manze!!
This CD I own and few others have here is a classic example of how the two work together.

"[Manze and Podger] allow the poetry of Bach's
music to unfold in a comfortably measured, lucidly punctuated
and eloquently inflected way." - Gramophone

Just picked up this nice little disc. Yevgeny Schubert: Wander Fantasie

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-m...0E51O/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0

I was interested in getting the Liszt transcription of Gretchen am Spinnrade.
He plays it well along with all the other material on the disc. there does not seem to be many versions of this piece on record. i wonder why. It is quite amazing piece of music. Is it just too difficult for most others to take on?

    Haydn
    SQ Op.76 No. 1
    Buchberger Quartet
    Recorded 2008

    and

    Haydn
    SQ Op.76 No. 1
    Quatuor Mosaïques
    Recorded 2000

Stark differences. Hubert Buchberger seems to think that this composition should be like Vivaldi's Four Seasons in which he is the feature. In the the Quatuor Mosaïques' recording Christopher Coin's cello is allowed to breathe (not featured) and be on equal ground throughout. Also, the Buchberger performance seems to be like "sharp cheddar" and they try hard to make the composition theirs and not Haydn's. The Mosaïques' recording is better blended and they are truly a quartet throughout without being too soft in their response. The sound engineering on the Mosaïques' is superior as well, though I do pick up a bit of breathing from one or more of the performers. This does not bother me much though, as it does not on the second Vegh LvB cycle, which is my favorite.

So, you're trying to tell us that the Buchberger production is kinda cheesy? I guess it's a good thing they chose cheddar and not Swiss, or they would play nothing but hole notes. OK, I now shall retire for the public gouda.

    Does Jarrett play the harpsichord?

I have Petri with members of the Academy Chamber Ensemble on Philips.

Currently listening to a particularly ghostly "Ghost Trio" courtest of Du Pre, Barenboim and Zukerman.

A very good version of Op. 76, one that can be had for a song, is the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos (two volumes). It's always a matter of opinion as which version of any work is "the best" but the Kodaly Quartet certainly does a nice job with Hayden SQ's by any measure.
