Love the Haydn/Kodály Quartet CDs. I can't believe I've had some of them for close to 20 years now.

 

Now playing and sounding absurdly good.

Couldn't pass on a SACD for $10 shipped.
Has some great tunes I remember as a Kid and the SFX are neat too.
Been on my want list for awhile.

 

I recon it could, parndner...as long as you're not strict in your definition. I've had that disc for many moons.

 

Got dis here one spinnin' right now. Just arrived in the mail. The usual polished, lyrical performance you'd expect from the Florestan Trio and the nice sound you'd expect from Hyperion:

oh I see the Stokowski has a nice bonus: the Firebird Suite...in the end I think I'll buy at least two or three performances to try to find the one I like more!

 

MOST Hybrid SACD titles will play on a standard CD player.
Matter of fact you can tell the improved remastering even on that....sounds lil better than normal.

..oops! I should have been more specific in my reply; I just wanted to say that I could buy the Hybrid too but won't be able to enjoy the high-res layer. Btw, thanks everyone for the suggestions..there are so many performances of Carmina Burana that I'm glad I asked advice to the SH gang

 

The interpretation of the ballet suite is the best as well with BPO at its best.
For the complete ballet, grab the Dorati's on Mercury, which is incredible both performance-wise and sonic-wise.

 

I'd count it as light classical. Anyway by all means, these tunes are masterpieces.

Haven't heard it, but Szell's Haffner electrified me when I first heard it almost 40 years ago, and there are very few recordings I have played more frequently in the years since.

 

The sonics are terrific on the Shaw/Telarc disc, but I think the "Carmina Burana" by Jochum on DG is a much better rendition and seem to fit the piece better.

 

The biggest advantage on the DG disc is IMO the singers. The trio surpass any peers.

 

I love Szell's work and his Mozart is certainly no exception.

I've owned them before in a big box from a mail-order club. Krips is fantastic in this repertoire.

How's the SQ?

PS- I don't think they qualify as little known. OK..maybe a little.

 

Probably not but who cares....it is orchestral music and a great CD to boot. Is that the SACD? I think I have it on SACD.

 

Not that I'm the standard, but I'd never heard of Alfven (and you have a favorite recording of his Second Symphony!).
