I'm sure glad I'm German when it comes to classical music. Gives me quite an advantage with a lot of names of composers and a few performers.

 

In addition, get ready to devote around ten additional minutes over any other recording of the piece you are listening to.

My penny thoughts as appended to Mark Swed's LA Times review:

I'm 3/4 German but know little of the German language.
Some of these composers names look like they should be pronounced one way when it's another.

Like Niels Gade it not a long "A" but short "A" almost like god.
I'm too accustomed to the English language.
Many of these Composers are French or German which vowels are pronounced different.

 

Hans Lauterslager was a Philips recording staff.
How should you pronounce the Dutch name 'Lauterslager' correctly?

 

I've been pronouncing it "sell-eh-bih-DA-chee," but I can't remember if I heard that somewhere or just made it up.

 

That's how I pronounce it as well, but who knows.

Yep, naming the greatest of them all BACH was just evil. Almost no non-German speaker will know what to do with the "ch". Though Chaplin's Great Dictator pretty much nailed it.

 

But this is hardly a common German surname? Oder?

Yes, he was.

 

Awesome recording. Awesome symphony. The final four minutes comprising the final coda with its syncopated oscillations in the violins is one of those goosebump moments for me.

agreed, das lied and symphony #9 are cut from the same cloth... and although i don't consider the symphony #8 really 'a symphony', much of the writing, especially the second section, is close to that level as well... for fun though it's hard to go wrong with #1 or #4

 

actually I don't drink. But I certainly did enjoy an 8oz Filet and the roasted artichoke. Ethan Phillips who is an avid steak connoisseur, said his ribeye steak was the single best steak he has ever eaten. His dad owned Franky and Johnny's in New York. Amazong meal.

The concert.......

The guys stood outside at intermission and after the concert and tried to express their utter disbelief. Steve Brown basically concluded that Yuja is "a freak." Ethan just kept on saying "Nobody can do that. That was impossible."

Hahn Hall in Santa Barbara is an oustanding intimate venue and absolutely fabulous for piano recitals.

Yuja did a master class today. I went back up to see that. What a privilidge. Much to my surprise she remembered me and did say that she will take me up on my offer to do her makeup.

She really upped the anti. I have to say she pretty much ruined Dance Macbre for every other pianist. What a nice kid.

 

Now playing CD4 from this set for a first listen ...

 

My list would probably go like this:

5, 2, 3, 9, 1, 7, 6, 4, 8. Any of those first three could be number one. I don't love number 8; I don't even really like it. Yet, I probably should add.
