If you've read the Living Stereo thread, you know that's a problem child in the series. I thought I'd escaped the difficulties, but when I tried to play the disc on a Pioneer Elite SACD player (actually 2 Pioneer players) over the weekend, they could not read the SACD layer. It will play on my budget Sony player.

  4. I don't have an SACD player but this should be the corrected disc, it was the last one missing in the series for me, I knew I had ordered it years ago but never received it when just last year elusivedisc told me they finally have my backorder ready.

SACD player makes those Esoteric discs sound so much better!

  6. I haven't found an SACD player yet that outperforms the 555 but I'm still looking, one of these days I will get one as a complement. Good thing is it will already find a nice SACD library ready and waiting. ;)

Good used classical selection in Bay Area?

Can any fellow Bay Area (preferably East Bay) residents recommend a good place to look for used (preferably cheap) classical vinyl and CDs? My impression is that the selection at Rasputin and Amoeba in Berkeley is not only limited but heavily picked over. Anyone else have this impression? Are there even any brick and mortar stores that have a good classical selection anymore?

San Francisco Amoeba was better the last time I looked. It would probably worth your while to go to the Hollywood Amoeba, they have gobs of LPs of classical music. Face reality—the pool of really good discs isn't getting any larger. Checking Amoeba frequently and being willing to pay a little more will improve your chances of finding something good.

I also have a few New Age/Synth CD's signed by artists....Peter Bardens and William Orbit.

Also these Epic Brass CD's signed by Earl Raney (Trumpet Player on cover) and His band back in 1991.
My Father-In-Law was a High School Music Teacher for several years and was Earl's first Music Teacher....also gave Him private lessons.
They came and played locally....I got to meet Him and He and His Band signed these CD's for me.

  13. Cool, I don't have the patience to wait after concerts to get a disc signed by the artist but my parents make it a point to get me a signed CD from almost every classical concert they attend. By now I have a nice collection of around 70 signed discs. Some are big names, some are up and coming artists.

WOW I woulda loved to have had CD signed by Bernstein or Copland!!
Andrew Manze....Hillary Hahn......Neeme Jarvi......oh I could think of a bunch I'd like to have of artist/conductors that are current.
I don't hafta worry I'll never get to see any of em in person.
I haven't even been able to find a CD our local Symphony has done let alone even see em live.

The theme of 2011! It's funny how many people on the board have adopted that this year. There's a whole thread devoted to it . . .

No reason to have paid attention to my contribution to that thread, but if you had you'd have noticed my stated goal was much less ambitious -- moratorium planned for January 2011 only, followed by reconsideration and further analysis. :)

Do you mean the thread I started in 2008?

    This one? http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=159304&highlight=

If so, I think it was pre-Classical Music Thread days, right? That's why I would have not noticed (or rather remembered) your contribution.

If you mean the newer one, I haven't even visited that thread.

Ah, 1553. I was just a little kid then, but I remember my parents playing it.

O' course, those were the days of tube equipment and vinyl - sounded pretty good, though. :)
