A number of years ago, I read the review of this CD in Stereo Review that this was the most hauntingly beautiful vocal work that reviewer had ever heard ...

I just ordered an Ashkenazy recording of Rach's second piano concerto but not this particular CD. I've been listening to and comparing the Janos/Dorati version to the Van Cliburn/Reiner. I wanted to have a real in depth knowledge base of the best performances for the piece as a reference for when I get the Yuja Wang/ Claudio Abado version that is coming out in March.

 

Ashkenazy had made multiple recordings of these works but his later recordings were considerably more mellow IMO ...

I suggest getting the Richter/Wislocki DG recording.

The 70's recording of Ashkenazy with Previn, LSO is one of my favorites of the Rach 2nd.

 

I seriously doubt that you’ve spent enough time with these recordings.

Did they send a replacement for all the music lost in the snow?

 

Just got it today, it is a later recording with Andre Previn 1972 and it is considerably more mellow.

 

I will look into it. Always facinating stuff comparing and contrasting perfomances of the same material.
