"From the Inside" is a great album and I'm glad to see it has aged well. I loved it at the time of release, but at the same time I thought it wasn't going to stand the test of time. I thought it was soon going to be dismissed at an attempt to follow in the heels of "Goes to Hell" and "Lace and Whiskey" with another hit single and a few rockers. I know this album is about the time Alice spent on rehab, but at the same time it somehow expands on the theme of "Ballad of Dwight Fry".

The title track is one of the best ones, a real killer. I prefer the album version to the single one, which is on the boxed set. It's amazing how some of the most hard-rocking songs on this album can be depressing. You can almost feel Alice's anguish and despair, crying for help.

In Alice's autobiography Golf Monster, he explains the creative process he and Bernie undertook. He says they would literally trade-off lines so for example, Alice would write, "Jackknife Johnny you're a floor moppin' flunkie/Tool of a dagger's drawn world," and Bernie would then come up with, "Jackknife Johnny them old vets gotta hate you/For bringing home that V.C. girl." That's a lot more than minimal participation!

You will not find better Alice Cooper lyrics anywhere than on From the Inside and the title song is testament to that. Every line in that song counts for something and not only does it set the scene for the album, it also gives us insight into the condition Alice was in while he was recording those previous classic albums. One of the ultimate rock and roll lifestyle songs.

"I Wish I Were Born In Beverly Hills" hit home for me in '82 when I spent a week there.

  8. While I'm sure this puts me in the great minority, I also love the follow up album 'Flush The Fashion', from 1980.

What's there to buy? He was at Alice's side for 30 years.

WISH I WERE BORN IN BEVERLY HILLS (3:38)

She looked so sleek and sassy
    Rolling down Rodeo Drive
She got her daddy's black Corniche
And her tennis pro by her side

And she wants her mother's lover
    To exercise her skill
And if she don't score him fast
She knows that her brother will

Oh I wish I were born in Beverly Hills
I swear I couldn't drink half as much as she spills
I want to live it up get my kicks and thrills
Be a gigolo lover and send her the bills

She says that she's an actress
    Just never got a part
    Now she's a teenage mess
With a burned out Gucci heart

She cracked one day at Cartier
When things came to a head
    They put her trinkets away
    And wrapped her up instead

Oh I wish I were born in Beverly Hills
I swear I couldn't drink half as much as she spills
I want to live it up get my kicks and thrills
Be a gigolo lover and send her the bills

She bit like a dog and she screamed like hell
"You ain't taking me to no padded cell
You better take all your hands off my high priced tail"

Oh I wish I were born in Beverly Hills
I swear I couldn't drink half as much as she spills
I want to live it up get my kicks and thrills
Be a gigolo lover and send her the bills

Although this is the catchiest song on the album I really don't like Alice singing about Gucci, Cartier and Cartier.

I got the shock of my life when Alice performed this song live in 2005. It's a great catchy tune but given the nature of the rest of the songs on the album this is the one that sticks out as not fitting in quite as well. Not a highlight but definitely not filler either - From the Inside doesn't have a 'filler' track IMO.

Again great lyrics, the first verse is really something special.

Sums it up and sets the image for the song.

  17. I'm waiting for the next song up, 'The Quiet Room'. My co-favorite on the album along with 'How You Gonna See Me Now'.

I haven't had the chance to comment on it yet. Stick around and as soon as it is up I'll tell you why it's awful.

'The Quiet Room', to me, is one of the strongest tracks on the album.

I love the way it starts calmly and then builds to anger. It is a perfect emotional roller coaster ride.
