Here is that Marc-André Hamelin again on yet another work.
Is this one as good as His Alkan I posted earlier on?

    And his Mozart.

Re Beethoven - although he is most famous for his 6th, but it was the allegretto from the 7th that was my gateway to classical music appreciation.

All of Hamelin's recordings are top notch IMO. The Grainger is terrific.

I HIGHLY recommend these to be added to your Collection.
I got the pair for $18.00 shipped ULN and it was well worth every penny.

    They are great stuff.

Currently spinning the Piano Sonatas of one of the greatest composers that ever lived...Scriabin. Totally void of sentimentality in his compositions unlike Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, etc. Way ahead in his time and totally original.

    Anyone else agree?

The Strokiest of them all—his last record, of Mozart. There is something here that is obviously wrong— this is Brucknerized Mozart. But somehow it works. There is a majesty in his performance of the overtures from Die Zauberflote and Nozze di Figaro I've heard from no-one else. Hesse speaks of Mozart's "Laughter of the Gods" in Steppenwolf, Bruno Walter demonstrates it on this record.

Geez, RRB, I tried. Just last night happened to break out Robert Taub's disc of Sonatas 3, 4, 5, & 10 on Harmonia Mundi (now OOP it seems). Nice performance by Taub, but still can't quite get into Scriabin's sonata compositions. Expressive, but devoid of melody and lyricism (maybe that's what you mean by "sentimentality," but melodicism is part of what I look for). I put the disc in the "Not sure what I'm going to do with it" pile.

    :agree:

I haven't heard the Hamelin, but I love my Ogdon and Ashkenazy sets.

The Sonatas are certainly not for everyone and don't get me wrong..I like those "sentimental" composers too. I just feel that Scriabin has been overlooked.

I love his 10th Piano Sonata...played it again for my wife last night and helped her with recognizing the themes but alas..I still get a puzzled look from her.

Maybe Sony will release a mega box of Bruno Walter's recordings. Frankly, I was underwhelmed by the Eugene Ormandy box.

If you're whelmed at all by Bruckner, you have to hear all three of Bruno Walter's late recordings.

I don't know whose version I was listening to, but the allegretto from Beethoven's 7th Symphony was probably the first piece of classical music I really paid attention to. It was in a b&w movie that took place in Europe during WW2/the Holocaust. Some people in hiding (presumably Jews, though I was too young to understand that then) tuned in their radio to listen for reports from the BBC on what was going on in the war, and they stopped when they heard the allegretto to listen to it.

Does anyone know what movie this was? I don't think it was Anne Frank.
