With all the female "celebrities" nowadays who are on the tabloids and TV every day acting foolish, Beverly Hills, lyrically, is a perfect commentary on today's female "role models"

Although I own FROM THE INSIDE — bought it day of release, which was Black Friday in November 1978 — it's never been a favorite. Still, some very worthwhile stuff here ... "Nurse Rozetta," anyone?

    THE QUIET ROOM (3:52)
    The California air
    Your nightgown on the stairs
    I remember every night
Scenes from home in the Quiet Room

How long have I been gone
    Did winter kill the lawn
And all those polaroids you sent
Are on the wall in the Quiet Room

    They've got this place
    Where they've been keeping me
    Where I can't hurt myself
I can't get my wrists to bleed
    Just don't know why
    Suicide appeals to me

    The Quiet Room
    Is sterilized and white
    It's like a tomb
With just a moth stained naked night

    Plastic forks and spoon
    No laces in my shoes
They allknow what I tried to do
    Outside the Quiet Room

    This quiet place
It ain't so new to me
    It's haunted atmosphere
    Has heard so many scream
    My home from home
    My twilight zone
    My strangest dream

    My confidant
    I have confessed my life
    The Quiet Room
Knows more about me than my wife

    They've got this place
    Where they've been keeping me
    Where I can't hurt myself
    I just can't
I just can't get these damn wrists to bleed

    A mattress on the floor
    No handles on the door
    I really need nothing here
    I'm alone

Pure classic Alice in my book.

Not my favorite track on the record. The "ba ba ba ba ba" backup vocals don't really fit the track to me, and I find the verses a little dull. But boy, when he kicks into "They've got this place," that's top notch stuff!!

The worst intro to ANY Alice Cooper song. Beyond sacharrine. The use of the synth to punctuate emotion is very cheesy and tacky. As for Alice, his vocal phrasings are starting to sound like self parody. The song is hardly believable either does anyone buy for a minute he was in a padded cell trying to cut his wrists? There are only one or two songs on the album where Alice is being honest and this isn't one of them.

The reason why you find that only a couple of songs on the album are 'honest' is that not all of the songs are autobiographical. In Wish I Was Born In Beverly Hills, Mille and Billie, Jacknife Johnny, Inmates, etc. Alice isn't referring to himself but to the people he met while incarcerated. There are more characters on the album than Alice himself. The Quiet Room is probably a combination of Alice himself and some other patients he met during his stay.

The Quiet Room is not my favourite track on the album but I think it is probably the best descriptive track Alice has written. The imagery is strong and vivid and the feeling of isolation and desperation is very clear. I agree that the intro is a bit soft but it is a track that builds, much like the Ballad of Dwight Fry; in terms of theme, progression and imagery, The Quiet Room is the sister song to ...Dwight Fry.

I have never bought any of the characters here: Millie and Billie c'mon. He could have made something as disturbed as Dwight Frye or Dead Babies but chose schmaltz over reality. His alcoholism is pretty much turned into a joke. Could you see Lou Reed churning this out?

Nobody ever said the song was autobiographical. Alice has said that each song is about a person he met while in that hospital. A few songs could be interpeted as about Alice himself but The Quiet Room isn't one of them. How do you know this song isn't honest? If it's based on someone he met in the mental hospital, then that's pretty close ot the bone. Alice has said he didn't use their name and exactly what they did because "they might find me".

I highly doubt Alice met anyone in the mental hospital by those names. But I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't meet someone in there who commited a crime along the lines of what's described within the song. Alcoholism is no joke and it's outlined quite poignantly in "How You Gonna See Me Now".

You obviously do not care for this album.

That song is one of the only true songs on the album I really just don't like the ballads though.

Why the hell would you listen to music and wonder if it's "honest"?!

Alice Cooper mid-late 70's ballads are amazing IMHO. His ballad voice is absolutely unique and the tunes are incredibly beautiful.

Why not as in this case it was about his drying out and the people he supposedly met there? It was hardly an insane asylum.

Alice remains my first hero. I'd like to set these words alongside your post. They spoke to me long before Alice looked "inside". Anyone whom has ever pulled out all the stops, to tear at the world around them, riding high and low, erases things they know. But for those periods before each big slide, nothing else matters, as you hold the reigns and gallop, into the welcoming scent of hell.

    Guilty

    Just tried to have fun
    raised hell and then some
    I'm a dirt-talkin', beer drinkin', woman chasin' minister's son
    Slap on the make-up
    and blast out the music
Wake up the neighbors with a roar like a teenage heavy metal elephant gun
If you call that guilty then that's what I am
    I'm guilty
    I'm guilty
    I like driving too fast
    Love going too far
It seems the law's on my *** every time I stick it out of the door
If you call that guilty then that's what I am
    I'm guilty
    I'm guilty
Bad boy on a summer night
When the heat makes me mean and I wanna fight
With my pedal to the metal
And I do what I want to do
Bad girls make me feel all right
When it's hot and they start screaming in the night
Golly gee, it's wrong to be so guilty
    I'm guilty
    Guilty
    I'm guilty
My conscience is on vacation in acute degeneration
Willpower has sunk to all-time low
If you call that guilty well I guess I am
    I'm guilty
    I'm guilty
If you call that guilty then that's what I am
    I'm guilty, I'm guilty, I'm guilty, I'm guilty
    I'm guilty, I'm guilty, I'm guilty, I'm guilty
    Well I'm guilty
    Yeah I'm guilty
    I don't care
    I'm guilty
I think I've been framed anyway
    They said I'm guilty
    I'm guilty
They're guilty and everyone is guilty

"The Quiet Room" is perfect in its intent, which is to convey the despair of the man inside. One of the most depressing songs on the album. Not to be heard when you're feeling depressed, for sure. "Just don't know why suicide appeals to me...(...) I just can't get these damn wrists to bleed!" If you really get into this song, at the very least you'll cry in the end.

My favorite line of TQR is "My confidant I have confessed my life, the quiet room knows more about me than my wife". By far, my favorite tune on the album, and possibly favorite A/C ballad.

  20. 'The Quiet Room', is one of the most vital pieces of 'From The Inside', In My Humble Opinion. I think it captures the essence perfectly, of the state of mind a person is usually in, by the time they get to the point, or place like Alice is describing.

    NURSE ROZETTA (4:15)
I'm a shepherd for the pentecost
I got my scriptures and my wires crossed
I got no kids and I got no home
They want us holy men to live alone

Since I've been here for a little stay
I see Rozetta day by day
She turns my head makes me cough
I want to tear my collar off

I just can't sleep at night
    Rozetta dressed in white
    She's got the Devil's light
    Shining in her eyes

Screamed my sermon damning sin and vice
When underneath I was a regular guy
My pulpit melted like a block of ice
When a bolt of lightning hit me from the sky

From my stretcher when they wheeled me in
I stared directly in the eyes of sin
    Nurse Rozetta standing over me
And I was helpless as a man of God could be

Nurse Rozetta I won't let her
Catch me peering down her sweater
Fantasizing silk suspender on her thighs
    Nurse Rozetta make me better
    Secretly my eyes undress her
Let me feel your tongue depressor

    I'm suddenly twice my size
My pants are all wet inside

She's so creative with a bar of soap
And so inventive with a stethoscope
To check my pulse she gotta hold my hand
I blow the fuse on the encephalogram

Satan sent her from the bowels of hell
I should have recognized old Jezbel
I surrendered to the urges felt
She popped the buckle on my bible belt

I just can't sleep at night
    Rozetta dressed in white
    She's got the Devil's light
    Shining in her eyes

    I'd lick her nylon seams
Like a hungry cat with cream
    Oh what a vivid seam
And I can't hold back no more

Rozetta and sweater in the sane sentance. Another misfire. Two lyricists trying to be too clever. Do nurses even wear sweaters?

Great lyrics filled with images and tension.

I think Alice's vocal nails the theme of the song.
