Took a chance on this awhile back. Never heard of the pianist, but was curious. So far her Beethoven has beauty, but not nearly enough tension and excitement.

I found this one in the bins last week, Jay. Hotter's 1942 recital for DG, reissued on Music & Arts in 2006. I think disk transfers are from orig. metal parts, with restoration by Lani Spahr -- ongoing white noise instead of fading out between tracks (a pet peeve of mine) -- and sounds very good. It doesn't get any Hotter (ouch), an instant favorite.

Is the ongoing white noise or fading out a pet peeve of yours? Mine is the latter.

For dishes only? Do you consider this excessive no-noising?

    :agree:

I saw that next to the sink and thought, wow, I'd never have to do dishes again. I'd just have to figure out how to eat cereal from a plate.

Thank you, Eddie. I'm listening to Hotter and Raucheisen now, courtesy of youtube. I kind of like those WWII recordings, for the history of it all. My mother played piano, but my first exposure to a lot of classical music came from watching WWII movies on TV as a little kid in the 1950s.

    Listen to "Guten Nacht." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMWX9a92Rzs

Oh no, don't remind me about the vinyl-sink "combo". :yikes: :tsk: Because in my experience the white glue comes next...

...and then rename the thread to "Classical Music Olympics"?

Some things I've been listening to recently.

Planes has been praised for Debussy, but, best as I can tell, panned for his Schubert. It certainly is not of the dreamy sort. But the lack of adornment has its merits.

The Barenboim recital got a lukewarm reception from Jed Distler, writing for Amazon; he disliked the "Appassionata." I on the other hand thought the slow movement was gorgeous.

There is no good reason to fade out white noise and remind a listener he is listening to 78 RPM records transferred to CD. The noise 'disappears' after a while, if source material, transfers and mastering are good enough. For me it does anyway. I would think this would be common practice by now, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Her performance of the Arietta from Op. 111 here is absolutely gorgeous!

At the risk of steering discussion away from Hans Hotter, I'd love advice on disposing of a Borders coupon, with the finalists the Haitink/CSO Mahler 6 SACD, and Jansons/RCO in Stravinsky's Firebird suite and Rite of Spring. Haitink's record draws the usual Haitink-related criticisms; the Jansons gets a really strongly-mixed reaction. If it matters, I have Lenny and Inbal in M6, Mackerras and Dutoit in the Stravinsky pieces.

    Which would you choose?

You should be happy that you can still find classical music at your local Borders store. My local Borders store is slated for closure and its classical music section has been gutted for a while ... :sigh:

Anytime when your personal collection is more impressive than your local classical music store, that store is nothing to write home about ... :righton:

    CD2
    Brahms
Piano Quartet in A, Op. 26
Piano Trio in A, Op. Posthumous

    Beaux Arts Trio
    Manahem Pressler, piano
    Daniel Guilet, violin (Op. Posth.)
    Bernard Greenhouse, cello
    Isidore Cohen, violin
    Walter Trampler, viola

As much as I enjoyed the Brahms Trios, to me the quartets are even better. The 'gypsy' Rondo in Opus 25 (on CD1) is a real show stopper! And Opus 26 has some of the most beautiful music I've heard.

It's like trying to retrieve remains from a shipwreck, bobbing along the surface of the water... I can get M6 for ten bucks and the Stravinsky for $11.

I bought this excellent twofer last summer just before the name Philips disappeared from all UM recordings ...

I also have that Brahms Piano Quartet set on Philips; it's one of my favorite classical CDs. Beautiful, beautiful music which just gets better with each listen. Great recording, too.
