Good! So they skipped his Sym. 3? I used to have Lenny's first reading on vinyl, and enjoyed it very much. I like this rather more deliberate version also.

    Copland
    Third Symphony

    Minnesota Orchestra
    Eiji Oue

Excellent SQ here. My receiver will decode HDCD provided the signal comes in digital, and all surround modes must be off -- stereo only. What I hear on the handfull of these discs I own is a bit more dynamic range and bass extension. The Minnesotans are recorded to great advantage.

An interesting disc. The Tintner Bruckners are a real bargain. :righton:

Yeah. It has excellent SQ and beautiful piano tone for an original analog recording ... :righton:

I have one of the original LPs of Bruce Hungerford's Beethoven sonatas. It was well received in the day.

The remastering was very well done. The SQ is excellent and the piano tone is great, as was the performance ... :righton:

And I still prefer Annie Fischer

Great performances. I recall Harris Goldsmith reviewing Hungerford's performance of Op. 111, considering it very close to Schnabel's famous recording as a performance, far better as sound.

This Ravel CD is probably the most demanding on any amp
s output. Incredible dynamics and tempi, crazy transients, just WOW-
Another disc I bought because of Manze. far from bad but nothng specoal either. YMMV

More demanding on the amp than Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man?

Now playing CD2 from this set for a first listen. Bruce Hungerford is indeed a much underrated piano virtuoso. CD1 has some of the best performances of the most popular Beethoven Piano Sonatas I have ever heard ...

Any recommendations for Prokofiev: Lieutenant Kijé Suite on SACD? Hows the Jarvi?

Not interested in recommendations for vinyl or CD, just SACD.

  20. I like the Mofi SACD.

There are only 4 SACDs of Kije. And imo Slatkin, recorded by M. Aubort, is the easy winner.

Yea, but Alexander Nevsky isn't something I'd want to hear a 2nd time.

What do you think of the Ashkenazy version on the Exton label?

Not sure who the resident expert on Prokofiev at this Classical Music Corner is. I have fewer than a dozen CD's on works by Prokofiev ... :)

I've been listening to the Anner Bylsma Plays Boccherini Sony 5cd box. There is an excellent review of this box on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Boccherini-Ce...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1302301938&sr=1-2

The reviewer went through the trouble of posting links to all of the original releases in the box. It's an excellent and very informative review that tells you exactly what each disc is and who is playing. You know the critical information that should be detailed in the actual box set! The price of buying one of the out of print cd's is more than the 5 cd box! It really is a nice set. Two cd's of String Quintets with the Kuijeken's. A disc of Cello Sonatas and two discs of Concertos, Symphonies, an Octet and Overture. It's been quite the treat listening to it.

I listened to two more of the Isaac Stern discs with no problem. Then I tried another Violin Sonata disc and the dreaded static blast returned. I've never had a problem with a new disc before. I'm not sure what I'll end up doing about this problem.

I also listened to a couple of great discs from the Rubinstein Plays Brahms set. I haven't heard much or any Rubinstein that I didn't enjoy. Much more listening ahead if anybody is interested and I have the time to post.
