I'm looking to get this title on CD, however have no idea of the preferred versions. The MFSL is not easy to find, and when it is it's priced very high. What are some other great options?

Rhino remastered by Bill Inglot & Geoff Sykes is fine by me.
Beware, I have not heard the MFSL.

I have both, and I''ll be damned if the Rhino wasn't released first !?!?!

Not only that, I hear no difference.

Is this the deluxe edition in the slip case I've seen around?

The original ATCO CD version is the closest the masters came to the Lp's overall sound! Love it better than that RHINO version! Those Bonus tracks don't do it much of a favor, especially the "Live" version!

Interesting. Have you heard the MFSL?

Yes,and it's basically the same flat master as the 1995 RHINO,only without the frills.

Wow, I'm glad I never tracked down the MFSL then.

Yeah, I like the original CD issue the best as well. Or spend three bucks and get the old Atco LP.

Out of all the Atlantic/Atco multi tracks that burnt up, the Iron Butterfly stuff survives in some weird quirk of fate. I'd love to remix the first three albums.

I'd let you remix In A Gadda Da Vida because it needs it. Those drums sound squashed. The debut LP (Heavy) sounds quite good. The third LP is an imporvement over the 2nd, but nowhere near the debut.

Apparently not everyone is in agreement according to this old thread. I'll keep my MFSL thanks. :)

If I recall correctly, the Inglot remaster is compressed. Of course my memory could be failing me, I could be thinking of a different remaster. If someone who owns this could post some waveforms, that would help. I've owned the original ATCO CD for years, and it sounds good to me. Better than the original US LP in my opinion.

Unless Rhino has changed their mastering philosophy I'll bet it was either compressed, as you say, or boosted by at least 2db from 10 - 13K. Some really great stuff album wise over the years, but I just can't stand that treble boost that has been with Rhino since the late 80's. Or... did Bill do the 2006 remaster?

I've got a Spinners compilation album called "The Very Best of Spinners" that Inglot/Hersch remastered in the early 90s. It sounds really good. I don't know what happened with those guys, those YES remasters they did a few years ago sound terrible.

In cases like this, where I couldn't detect a difference if you held a gun to my head, I have to wonder...I paid 10 bucks for the Rhino, but $100 for a sealed MFSL...am I not going to BS myself into thinking I can detect the slightest difference so I'm not as big a Foole as I would be ? Parted from my money and all ? :help:
