I always keep an eye out for their CDs, but the only one I've come across during the past few years is the Volume II: 1975-1980 compilation. Their catalogue seems to be a bit rare around these parts....
Doug Larson has a good few , i highly recommend , Roller , Suspiria & Zombi/Dawn Of The Dead as ESSENTIAL http://www.hicom.net/~dlarson/italy.htm
I'm no expert, but always enjoyed their stuff in the context of the films, and I even had a few of the CDs, including the two best ofs and Zombi (Dawn of the Dead, not Zombi!) My favorite might be Suspiria.
The Cinevox version of Profondo Rosso I have is 75 minutes and is chock full of alternate takes of most of the main cues. The problem is, I find the album hard to take all at once because there's so much repetition. The sequencing sucks too. I usually skip around and listen to the main themes. I appreciate all the extra material, but I'd prefer the proper soundtrack in its original running order with the bonus material tacked on at the end. Other than that, there's some great music here.
There's also a 2 disc version that has the original lp on disc 1 , and the additional material on disc 2 http://www.discogs.com/Goblin-Profondo-Rosso/release/976112
I own the single disc edition that Rael mentions, but would love to get my hands on this 2-discer. Not only does it feature the original album on disc one, it's supposed to feature more material on disc 2 that wasn't included on the original single disc issue. (Plus the single disc has that obnoxious spoiler cover-art, as pictured in post #10).
I have most of their albums on Original Import LPs. My 'Profondo Rosso' LP is on Cinevox Records MDF/85 MDG 85. The Cut/Mastering dates in the deadwax are 3 3 75 so it looks like an Original Pressing. The Sound Quality is Incredible, amongst the best sounding LP's I've ever heard... No one has mentioned their 3rd album Il Fantastico Viaggio Del "Bagarozzo" Mark. This thread might not make it that far so I wanted to mention it. It often gets overlooked but is also an incredible album.
I haven't had the luck of finding ANY used/new pressings of theirs on both viny or CD in person. Sure, I can do ebay, but I'd rather have the thrill of the hunt. The only thing I have of theirs on vinyl is the Dawn of the Dead soundtrack (which I DID buy online).
I do agree with your criticism, but the score is so great that I can listen all the way through and enjoy it (akin to the Suspiria release). I love the guitar breakdown that begins half way through 'Mad Puppet', and the nursery rhyme is always haunting. I've watched the Argento films to death, so I enjoy listening more to the scores/soundtracks these days... I would love to see an official edition of the Phenomena soundtrack (which Simonetti provided music for), with both the songs and score in the one set. There's some wonderful stuff there (and thankfully Internet fans have responded to the call...)
Roller (1976) Cinevox 1. Roller 2. Aquaman 3. Snip Snap 4. The Snake Awakens 5. Goblin 6. Dr. Frankenstein - Massimo Morante / guitars - Fabio Pignatelli / basses - Claudio Simonetti / organ, piano, Hohner clavinet, Moog, Logan & Elka string synthesizers - Maurizio Guarini / Fender Rhodes piano, Hohner pianet, Moog, clarinet, piano - Agostino Marangolo / drums, percussion
Roller. Goblin's best album, IMO. Parts of it sound like the Dario Argento soundtrack that never was. I wish Goblin had done a few more non-soundtrack albums.
