I have a disc with him playing Oboe Concertos by Telemann. A little Telemann can be rather nice.

My suggestions - in most cases I only have/know one recording:

La Traviata (No. 1 suggestion/I gather the Living Stero set is hard to find, but try)
    Tosca (Callas mono)
Der Rosenkavalier (One of Schwarzkopf's greatest roles)
    Tannhauser (Solti)

And you have to try a Mozart opera. I'd suggest "La Nozze di Figaro," but the most "romantic" is definitely "Don Giovanni."

    Thanks! :righton:

Who are the performers/conductor on the Living Stereo Traviata?

I have both of those, the Netrebko on DVD. Very modernist production, but I spend most of the time just looking at her.

    My condolences. ;)

I guess we can't agree on everything, right?

    Too bad! :)

I'm a little surprised though, living where you do, that you're not a Yanks or Mets fan. Just a contrarian in NYC? (I see the SHTV spell-checker is a bit of a contrarian itself, suggesting that "contrarian" is misspelled.)

I grew up (well, I lived in Lynn, MA) until I was 22.

Yeah I figured that. I don't mess with SACDs.

All this discussion of "Tosca," and I had a fairly mellow day at the office today, which allowed me to put on a recording as I take care of some work, so I'm listening to this 1957 recording of the opera from Covent Garden. Maybe a marginally more exciting Corelli, five years before the Met. broadcast recording I cited above, but in noticeably worse sound (even to me, and my notice-needle is probably not as sensitive as most on this board).

Even if you don't have an SACD player, they're sometimes worth checking out if the CD layer began with the SACD master, which may be better than another CD release.

I used to work on the North Shore from 1988-1991, after I graduated from BU. Spent a fair bit of time in Lynn...

The redbook layer of the Living Stereo SACDs was remastered to general acclaim. However, in this instance, the price differential is substantial ($85 new at Amazon for the SACD).

If you can still find the Dorati/Concertgebouw recording on [the now defunct] Philips label, grab it:

    I HATE SPORTS ! ! !

You know that part of the brain that is taken up by baseball and baseball stats?

In my brain, that place is taken up by classical music and classical music stats.
