Collectively and from what I've heard, 2011.

The 1994 ones were nothing special.

While the EU 1994 were what they were, I say these 2011 new ones are the ones for me. Finally some albums like Animals got great sounds:righton:

What's the dynamic range like on the 2011 versions compared to the 1994 versions?

The redbook layer of the 2003 SACD of DSOTM was brickwalled to death, hence my reluctance in buying the 2011 version...

This should be an interesting poll. I've hemmed and hawed about forking over for the 2011 editions.

Please state the year of release?

So you prefer the sound on the Floyd Cd's prior to the 1994 Sax ones, which country are these USA, JPN or Europe ?

I would say that it depends on the individual title, but taken as a whole I prefer the 2011 releases.

    1983 - 1988 depending on the album.

Yes, I prefer a more natural sounding/realistic/relaxed presentation. They are from Japan although the Japan for other countries pressings carry the same masterings and could sound the same. I've heard some of the 1994 Doug Sax pressings and they failed miserably when compared. I will be checking out the new 2011 release of The Wall soon, but I'm not going to bet the farm it will beat my 50DP pressing.

The 2011 remasters are definitely louder than the 1994 remasters. however they are NOT brickwalled.

This sounds like the modern use of a multi-band compressor. Gone are the days of hyper extended treble and bass frequencies but the price to be paid is it sounds not fluid and well balanced like the originals with everything now pronounced forward. Kind of mis-aligned if you will to make them appear louder/more detailed.

Can you post an EAC image?

I'm at work now, but can later tonight. There are a couple of EAC images in the other Pink Floyd threads - I think there is at least one in the Discovery thread - since the loudness question has been discussed.

I found the much praised SACD layer of Dark Side to sound hyped-up compared to the MFSL. The MFSL might not even be your first choice, but that relaxed presentation is exactly what I felt, even if I couldn't put an audio description on why. No reason why I should feel tense while listening to music.

They mostly hit it out of the park with the 2011 remasters (minus AMLOR)

The 2011 remaster is on top, the Sax remaster on the bottom.
From Animals, the third track, Pigs.

I don't know if we're talking about the same CDs, but, as I posted in other Pink Floyd 2011 remasters threads, I have early Japanese CD reissues of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (CP32-5269; matrix: CP32-5269 1A2 TO) and A Saucerful of Secrets (CP32-5272; matrix: CP32-5272 U 1A1 TO) and I was very disappointed when I listened to those CDs: the former sounds very harsh/shrill to my ears, the latter a bit better. I don't have any other versions to compare them with and I'm thinking of trying the remasters of those two albums.

I asked in the other threads if anyone had compared the early Japanese CDs with the 2011 remasters, but no one replied.

I have all the JPN early Cd releases, 1994 and now the 2011's and I think the JPN (50DP) are still the best (I wish to off load some when it can be decided which is best etc), although its hell of a lot music to get through to compare with three or even 4 different Cd versions:shake:... Perhaps it is to early to decide yet which sounds best, although on 'Fat Old Sun' I can hear the compression and it doesn't sound quite right on the 2011 ?

What do you think of the early Japanese CDs I mentioned in my post #17?

IMO The JPN are much better than the 2011's, using 'Flaming' and 'Set The Controls' as a comparison

The CP32 Piper doesn't sound harsh/shrill to you? Could you describe in just a few words what's better than the 2011 remasters? Thanks.

That second waveform isn't actually the Sax remaster. It's the 80s original, but maybe labeled as 92/94 remaster. It's mess with what is actually the remastered version and what is not..

I dont think the CP32 sounds 'Harsh/Shrill ??' But I do know that if you listen to the 'Scarecrow' on the new 2011 remaster, that the compression has bought the 'hiss' level up and it sounds terrible, like the old 'Wow and Flutter', i can even hear a buzz sound, like you used to get when dubbing cassette tapes.

Listen from 8 secs onwards of Scarecrow on the new 2011 remaster:shake:

  24. For the following I vote the Sax remasters:
    Atom Heart Mother
    Meddle
    Dark Side of the Moon
    Wish You Were Here
    Obscured By Clouds
These are the only albums I can compare and comment on at this time.
The 2011 are fine and worth getting if you have gaps in your collection, but to me they sound no better than the Sax remasters and in some cases (Wish You Were Here) worse.

Guthrie's remasters are louder, but they sound pretty good to me, I just don't think you need to replace the Sax remasters with them.

Thanks. I'll try the CP32 again, but I'm not sure I'll get the 2011 remasters.
