I just picked up the 22-LP Funk & Wagnals set for a good price, a nice selection of basic repertoire.
Does anybody know what labels issued this material originally?

Vox/Turnabout TV 34081S.a work from 1954 for alto & an instrumental
    sextet which features famed flutist/flautist Gazzelloni.the percussion,which
includes xylorimba & vibraphone, sounds pretty good on this.some nice
"modern" sounds.released in the mid-60s,it has a $2 price sticker from our
local hi-fi shop which finally closed a few years ago.

Finally got a copy of this. The more I hear this pianist, the more I love his work.

The second recording of one of the 20th century's masterpieces, that has attained its place in the repertoire. Congratulations!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_marteau_sans_maître

    First 2 commercially released recordings:

"1. Late 50's recording with the ensemble of the Domaine musical, originally
released on the French label Vega and in the States on Westminster. Never to
my knowledge reissued on CD. Mezzo: Marie-Thérèse Cahn

    2. Early 60's recording with the ensemble of the Domaine musical, originally
released on Adès and in the States on Turnabout. For a while it was available
on an Adès CD. Mezzo: Jeanne Deroubaix"

Hindemith's was first and foremost a violist. It was he who was soloist at the premiere of William Walton's viola concerto in 1929. He was also fairly proficient with every instument in the orchestra. He could dash off new music as fast as his hand could write the notes...maybe not all of it great but all of it good.

His Symphony: Mathis der Maler is a 20th century masterpiece.

BTW, after all the positive input from you guys, I ordered the Takács set of Beethoven's piano sonatas at amazon.com marketplace (only to find that the price dropped another $12 a few hours later :realmad:). If someone else is considering this set here, you can get it for around $68 now at amazon.com. Really a bargain considering how much it is at other places (or countries). But the price is changing every few hours.

I listened this morning to Michelangeli's performance of Grieg's piano cto issued by BBC Legends as a single CD and as part of a budget priced 3-CD set. What power, confidence, authority combined with genuine romantic poetry and passion. Is this the definitive reading?

The competition is unusually stiff for that work, as every pianist seems to have recorded it. I must have over a dozen Grieg PC recordings.

Do you know how much of that set is unique to it?

for me it's one of the great ones! i remember when it was first released the reviewer pointed out a small smudge in the opening descending salvo which was completely uncharacteristic of michalangeli, perfectionist that he was. and then they went on to say that it's almost as if that moment spurred him on to greater heights. anyway, we'll never know, but you're right that the performance itself is completely white hot!

I am totally unqualified to answer that. It is the only disc of recordings by him that I own. :o

I only have 7 of Moiseiwitsch's CD's so far and they are all on Naxos Historical. Just like recordings by S. Richter, I expect to have more of his recordings on the shelf in the future.
