Until a half dozen years ago, I used to be a semi-regular at the Y.

Are you actually closer to DC than to NY?

I hear you. But I have heard many HIP diehards being overly critical of Karl Richter ...

Pretty limited USA tour leg: NYC, Chicago, Napa Valley, and Middlebury College (!). Perhaps he'll add some between now and then. It'd be great to see him in the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society series.

Middlebury was one of the first places he played in the USA. I think he plays there every trip here.

What does Napa Valley have that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia do not have? I visited NV some twenty years ago and really was not that impressed.

I talked to a number of people in Phila. the first time he toured the USA. No one was able to give me a good reason why he didn't play there. Lots of people -- everybody! -- plays Philadelphia.

I wasn't as taken with Northern California as I expected to be. Give me LA anytime over SF.

    I'm pondering this one myself!

I do not like LA one bit (hope Eddie is not offended), as the smog is too much for me ...

Great article on the orchestra with the largest budget in the US, and its amazing growth over the last eleven years and how it managed to bounce back fully from the 2007-2009 recession. From Los Angeles Times:

Critics have been rather hard on Gustavo, but I love a guy who can bring such an infections joy and passion into classical music. Orchestras need more of this kind of thing IMHO.

Marin Alsop brought that to the Colorado Symphony IMHO. While more reserved than Gustavo (from what I've seen of him), her accessibility and musically inventive programming made the CSO one of the coolest mid-sized organizations around.

We get a very good selection here in Philly. The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society (where I am off to in about 10 minutes to hear the Takacs, and I saw Richard Goode last night) is really outstanding. Though they're a touch conservative -- probably necessary given the Philly Main Line crowd. Philly concert programming and jazz has long been fairly conservative.

Can't agree there! :) The Bay Area is incredible, I think. I have nothing against the beaches in Santa Monica though.

Yep, terrific school and a nice setting, but probably not what you'd guess he'd have as his fourth tour stop. :)

    Phenomenal. Why move?

I have a buddy I used to work with. He somehow talked the firm into putting him up in the LA office for half a year. He got his first apartment -- which the firm paid for, along with his ridiculously pimped out long-term rental car -- and decided it was too small. (I was there, saw it, and thought it was borderline.) So they got him a place twice the size, whose sliding glass door literally opened onto the sand. Unbelievable. Can you imagine waking up, and before even showering and shaving for work, being able to swim in the ocean? That's really something.

Tremendous, and clearly what Philly is hoping to see as well with YNS, not quite as dynamic or famous, but young, energetic, and high caliber.
