I thought I detected a very faint counting of the beats (with percussion) during the dead space between verses that I had never noticed before on my initial listen to this version last night.

I'm looking forward to getting to know this edition well, and comparing it to my other versions (Gastwirt Remaster and early vinyl) in due time. I am curious about Barry Diament's mastered version of this title as well, and may seek one out in the used bins.

I like this more than I expected to. Is the gibberish from the start of Marrakesh Express really a part of this version of Guinevere?

As a refresher, how do I identify Barry Diament's mastering version?

JUST arrived via UPS. #0759. Haven't opened it yet.

Will give it a listen after I get back from ... later. I know it will sound great. But I'm looking forward to it.

I believe it is any original USA CD? Or Japan etc.

Great job Steve! It sounds like I'm in the recording studio.

Warm and balanced with a full sound stage. The vocals are perfect. :righton:

Comparing this with the 2006 CD, the 2006 one sounds like the voices are muffled. Easily distiguishable over a good pair of headphones. The 2006 disc seems to have more bass to me.

Definitely glad I purchased this one.

Yep, that's the one. I like it a lot.

...but I suspect that because of how Byrds-y it feels with drums, they decided to avoid that vibe.

OK, then: How do I identify any original USA CD?

BTW: Who mastered then the original CD outside the U.S.A. and Japan?

The original is Atlantic 19117-2. All of the eighties CDs have the Diament mastering.

I received my copy from Amazon yesterday. (Padded envelope, btw - no damage to case or jewelcase.) Last night, I compared my original Atlantic CD that Barry did ... to Steve's new remaster ... and to the 2006 remaster. (Keep in mind that I have very average equipment. I like my Senns tho - and I used them.)

This exercise made me re-evaluate my opinions a bit & I realized how very good Barry Diament's work for Atlantic was all those years ago! To my aging ears, both are very close. I give Steve's the "edge" - there just a little something "more" in his mastering, whether it be in the way the bass resonates or the cymbals sound. It's really good!

That said, I kept going back to Barry's & marveled at what a great job he did on this title at a time when CDs were really getting cranked up. So many labels were shoving catalog into the marketplace as quickly as they could. Some titles were done properly (like this one) - and some were were ground out using whatever tape they could grab the fastest. I don't have the 1994 mastering to compare - I'm sure someone here has them all! But listening to Barry's version for the first time in awhile, I can't imagine why Atlantic thought it needed to be remastered.

    I will be keeping both of these - Steve's & Barry's!

The 2006 version sounds way too "boomy" in comparison...and I generally like a little bass in my music. But it really stands out when you listen to all 3. The 2006 also sounds a little compressed to me now. Things like cymbals are too upfront where they should be floating in the background. I will *probably* let this version go - the bonus tracks don't excite me all that much.

But I'm not done - I want to repeat my test after the holidays & include my original vinyl before I make any decisions.

Excellent job! Now - repeat after me ..."We want 'Deja Vu' ...we want 'Deja Vu'!"

I think it's pretty easy to identify the original CD version even without all of that info. If it doesn't have a note about being remastered by Joe Gastwirt on the back, doesn't have bonus tracks, and isn't a gold CD, it's Barry's original mastering. If somebody knows that's not the case, please correct me.

The only version of this I have is Barry's mastering, and I think it sounds fantastic. I can't wait to hear SH's version, even if it's only slightly better that would be one heckuva great sounding CD!

A/D converters have also come a ways since Barry mastered this album. Which is not meant to detract from Steve's work on the new version (which I haven't heard yet, tho I can't wait to!)

Bass is noticeably loose and boomy on some songs as compared to the new AF.

    I checked already:
In one post it is 19117-2. In the other post it is 19177-2.
Which one is correct and which one is wrong?
