You know that Aerosmith's version is a cover, right?

Foghat's version is also a cover, so? Actually they're both covers of covers. The relationship is the Johnny Burnette Trio recorded both songs on a single with an almost identical arrangement in 1956.

Train was written by Tiny Bradshaw, Howard Kay, and Lois Mann released in 1951 by Bradshaw. Honey Hush was written by Big Joe Turner and released in 1953.

I love both of those, but Train gets the edge.

Does it affect people's opinions of TKAR if they know it's not Perry or Whitford soloing on there? Apologies if that comes across as a threadcrap or something - I am genuinely curious.

Much prefer the Foghat version, they did a great boogie rocker on it.

Aerosmith but not because of them.....amazing gtr solos by someone other than the slackers in Aerosmith.

It's those guys who played on the Rock and Roll Animal version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane," right? I read where one of them claimed that anyway.

Has Joe Perry ever responded to this?

There's certainly enough out there on the web to corroborate this. I had no idea.

Yes Hunter and/or Wagner. As far as I know, Perry has neither confirmed or denied. Or maybe nobody has been brave enough to ask?

    Give me Foghat anyday.

    Lonesome Dave was great, RIP!

A better poll would've been "Train Kept A Rollin'", Yardbirds vs Aerosmith. Or Aerosmith's "Train Kept A Rollin'" vs. The Yardbirds "Stroll On"...either way, I'd have voted for The Yardbirds.

The Yardbirds version, however great, is actually my least favorite of the three. I like Aerosmith's and Johnny Burnette's best. Johnny Burnette and the Rock 'n' Roll Trio were phenomenal. Rockabilly par excellance. That music probably rocked harder than anything else released in the '50s (though Little Richard would give them a run for their money).

Agreed! That Rock 'n' Roll Trio version is like an out of control freight train (and still sounds that way 55 years later!)

I should have explained the premise of the OP last night, but it was late and I was fried. The two recordings in the poll were released within 2 months of each other in early 1974. I was 13 at the time, and it was the first time I had heard any version of either song. I remember though the songs were different lyrically, I was struck by the similarity of the music. So I was just wondering, as I did back then, if the songs are related in some way. (TheOx provided an informative answer.) The poll itself was a just last minute add-on, ya know... for fun. :)

Aerosmith. Like them, have no interest in Foghat.

The Foghat's weird, as it clearly melds "Train" with "Honey Hush" - it sounds almost nothing like earlier versions of "HH" but is a WHOLE LOT like the Aerosmith and Yardbirds "Train".

If you go from Johnny Burnette to Yardbirds to Aerosmith, you still hear the same song. I hear almost nothing of prior "HH" versions in the Foghat one - they basically just sang the song's lyrics over "Train"...

Fleetwood Mac's is my fave (retitled "Hi Ho Silver"), but I voted for Foghat.

It's all cool with me. As a husband and father of three, work and factoring in going to school for my Masters...I am fried at night too.

It's certainly thought provoking. I can see where the comparison factors in. They do sound a bit similar.

    Carry on :)
