Count me as another here who loves Discipline and the two records that followed it. I'm not as much of a Crimhead as I once was, but I seem to recall that the original vinyls feature a slightly different mix of "Matte Kudasai" than what appears on the CD and that the symbol on the album's cover (the Celtic knot-work type thing) is different from what appears on the currently available CD cover).

My Warner-EG vinyl sounds superb (and it's a record club edition).

Fripp removed a guitar part of his from "Matte Kudasai" for one of the cd issues.
The original vinyl mix is available on the latest issue of the cd as a bonus track.
At some point Fripp discovered that he did not have the proper copyright clearances for the original celtic knot and replaced it with a similar looking one.

All this talk about the original vinyl issue is making me want to get mine out to play...:righton:

This is a great album, I like it a lot, as well as the other two in the "series", but have nary a one on LP, just the "Made in Holland" mini lp cd's which IMHO sound killer.

    Thanks for this interesting info!

By all means, I think you should get out your copy. :) I'm about to listen to mine again as soon as I finish my writing session...

I bought a Canadian pressing of the LP when it was first issued and then lucked out by finding a Japanese copy later on. I quite like the sound of the Japanese version. The cover art is much better on the Japanese version, as well. The embossing of the knot graphic is much more pronounced. I also managed to pick up a Japanese copy of Beat back in the day, too.

I saw them at Liverpool University on May 8th, 1981 when they were still called Discipline, and the album (plus name change) was still several months away! I was never much of a KC fan (still not), but had enjoyed Bruford's work with Yes, Levin's work with John Lennon and, especially, Peter Gabriel and Belew's work with Frank Zappa, so I was curious.

My memories: I helped with the gear set-up, so was able to catch the sound-check too. I was wearing a Gabriel T-shirt which raised a smile from Levin. No one at the University seemed to have much idea who they were. Belew sat in the foyer stringing his guitars with no one bothering him, while Fripp walked around among the students. After sound-check Bruford wanted to buy a cup of tea from the little old ladies who used to serve drinks in one of the common room sitting areas. He must have tried to pay for it with a 20 pound note, or something, and they didn't have enough change to give him, so I paid for him (it was something like 5p a cup)! :)

The Lounge Lizards were the support act.

Of course, no one knew the material, but they played the majority (all?) of Discipline. Belew during Elephant Talk was like how he is in Laurie Anderson's Home Of The Brave film. Most of the material was very well received, but the biggest cheers were saved for Red. Fripp very much took a backseat role, and Belew was left to engage with the crowd.

I remember it being an excellent show, and was surprised at how much of the music I could still recall months later when the album was finally released. Although I have Beat and Three, it's almost always Discipline I reach for when I want to hear anything by KC, and listening to it again for the first time in ages reminds me of how good a record it is.

Great post. I had a similar experience with REM while a high school student in the mid-80's.

My cousin was a student at UVa at the time, and signed up to help the roadies backstage. I went up with my girlfriend and a couple other friends, and got to meet the band. By the time we got up to C-ville, my cousin had already escorted Stipe to a local vegetarian restaurant.

After the show, I quizzed Stipe about his lyrics until he got pretty bored with me, I think. :)

I managed to find a promo Discipline for $8 at the record show. Also found a promo single that I'd never seen before:

Friend of mine went to Britain when it came out and got me the UK version....I liked that one sonically and the US one as well. But the UK sounded better to my ears.

@ Henryflowr, I think that was the Gordian knot, which Alexander the Great ripped asunder NOT a Celtic one.

@davenav. Bruford used Simmons Electronic Drums.

Elephant Talk Dance Remix! I had no idea this existed. Who knows, this may end up as a bonus on the 5.1 DVD-A of Discipline?

    Thanks!

You were right about the changes being minor though. Add one second to the bass noodling and then delay the guitar part a bit. Please report back when you've found the dance remix of Lady Of The Dancing Water... ;)

IIRC RF asked BB to refrain from using cymbals as much as possible-the extreme was the TOAPP where only AB has hihats!

mAybe cause they are Paistes and most sound midrangey and harsh, as opposed to Zildjians...

    Canadian WEA information?

I just picked up a copy of Discipline on vinyl, made in Canada by WEA. It has both WB and EG logos, no bar code on the cover. The catalog number is XBS 3629 Q. Does anyone have any information on this one? Is it the George Piros mastering?

I've never seen a George Piros cut of Discipline. Not sure if such an animal exists. If yours was cut by Piros, you would see AT/GP in the deadwax (sometimes written @t/gp or other slight variations).

I agree with Craig. Not a Piros cut.

Your copy sounds like my Canadian pressing which I bought right when it was released. The Q on the label denotes that it was pressed by Quality Records. Mine has another Q in the deadwax (on the opposite side of the label from the matrix number). That's also a sign that it was pressed by Quality. Whereas Columbia/CBS had their own mastering facilities in Don Mills, Ontario (where the bulk of WEA LPs were mastered and pressed), I'm not aware that Quality had their own in-house mastering department. So, as in many cases with Canadian vinyl, the actual mastering engineer is a mystery.

My copy has the following listed in the deadwax: @t/gp
Would it be considered the preferred version?

Doesn't seem like there is a bad vinyl pressing of this album. My WB copy from release time sounds very nice too. It's not a GP though.

My KC story goes back to the release of Three of a Perfect Pair. Fripp visited the WEA shipping plant in Marlton, NJ when the album was released. I was working in the order dept. on a CRT. I was able to meet him and got him to sign a 12 inch promo single of Elephant Talk. I asked Robert if the new album would have the same sound as the last two albums and he looked a little bit annoyed and said that yes, 'it's a trilogy and the sound was similar'.

Always felt I brought him down a little with the question. Probably just me. Anyway, it was nice meeting him and he was very cordial while he was checking out the shipping and sales facility.

Are you sure that was Fripp and not Adrian Belew?

So it does exist. Can you give some more details: label, catalog number, the rest of the matrix? I'm curious. . .

George Piros is generally well regarded. Often, but not always, his masterings will be preferred. I have not seen anyone post about having a Piros cut of Discipline and comparing it to other masterings (one of the reasons I wasn't sure one existed).
