    Now playing:
    • Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974): Benzin, ballet in one act by Robert Storm Petersen, Op. 17 (1928) • Archæopteryx, for orchestra, Op. 51 (1949) • To Apollon, God of Light (1930) - Danish National Symphony / Owain Arwel Hughes [Dacapo 2008 SACD, Recorded in the Danish Radio Concert Hall on May 1-2 and June 11-16, 2007, Recording producer: Chris Hazell (Op. 17) and Preben Iwan (Opp. 17, 51), Sound engineer: Jan Oldrup, Editing and mastering: Preben Iwan and Jan Oldrup, Recorded in coöperation with the Danish Broadcasting Corporation — entertaining, inventive, colorful music by this Danish composer, Benzin (Petrol) is reminiscent of Poulenc, Milhaud, Roussel, et al.]

Now playing another 20th Century ballet, La Giara, by one of my more rewarding recent discoveries, Alfredo Casella:
    • Alfredo Casella (1883-1947): La Giara, Op. 41* (1924) • Serenata, for reduced orchestra, Op. 46bis (1930) - Riccardo Caruso (tenor)*; Orchestra I.C.O. Lecce / Marco Balderi [La Bottega Discatanica 1997, Recorded by Studio Elite, Sermide, Mantua, Italy, January 1997 — ttbomk, this is the only full-score recording of La Giara, one of Casella's most noteworthy compositions]

A fabulous disc. I love those DaCapo discs. The Nielsen's are great on DaCapo.

Agreed. And re Riisager's ballet music, Benzin, I said that it
On repeated listen, I have to say the main influence I hear is Stravinsky's neoclassical phase (think Pulcinella). Whatever Riisager's gifts as a composer, he was undoubtedly a master orchestrator, IMHO.

He was a great composer and orchestrator. Glad to see others that have that disc.

That's a phenomenal recording. I have it on EMI CD -- I didn't know it had been issued in the US by RCA. Nice pictures of the LP set.

I remember the first time I heard it, I thought Fischer-Dieskau was in stereo. I'm half-kidding, but I mean that he sounded so rich clear, compared to everyone else. Not that Suthaus and Flagstad (and Schwarzkopf) are not great singers, they are; it is just that the young Fischer-Dieskau was so impressive, especially to me. Anyhow, I love "Tristan" and that recording.

You know, I don't really know. It may have been. I think it may be on some of those E. Power Biggs recordings, though I don't have any of them.

It would certainly make for an interesting evening. Hardly anybody would dare to do that now though. Especially here. You'd have fifty paying ticketholders and the rest of the hall would be students who got in for free.

Have you heard any of Milhaud's chamber music? Someone played a quartet for me a few years ago and it was that that first made me think I'd really been missing something by not knowing who he was. But I can't remember now which piece that was . . .

Here's what I'm listening to right now, more 20th century music.
