U.S. Columbia 45s from the early 1980s looked black but were actually deep, deep red if you held them up to a bright light.

I think all twin-tone pressings were translucent. Also, a lot of American recordings from the 90's (johnny cash, jayhawks). I also have a test pressing of Randy Newman's "trouble in paradise." I'm not sure if the stock copy was pressed on this vinyl or not.

I have two different pressings of The Go-Go's "Talk Show" (IRS) - one purple and one amber/brown-ish. Also, Canadian pressings of "Vacation" are green.

My promo copy of "Undertow" by Tool is clear:

I have quite a few more including "We Must Obey" by Fu Manchu and "The King of Limbs" by Radiohead. The first 100 of everything Relapse presses is always clear but those go to the band and label friends.

The "Press to Play" translucent LP doesn't have that "Quiex II" sticker on the front cover like many of them do. The vinyl looks black on the surface, but held up to a light, the light easily shines thru in a kind of yellowish-brown color. I have looked high and low for one of these wherever I see this LP in record store bins, but I've never found one on my own. The copy that I own is one that I bought from a fairly prominent Beatles expert.

My copy has the gold embossed Capital promo stamping in the upper right corner of the cover. My theory is maybe Capitol sent some of these to radio stations only. This, however, is not a hard and fast rule, I have seen other Press to Play LP's with this gold promo stamp that are just plain black vinyl.

The dark yellowish brown vinyl is virgin vinyl, and some record companies pressed their promos on virgin vinyl, Warner Bros' Quiex pressings are the best known. I never knew Capitol used it...

My late 80's pressing of The Rolling Stones "12x5" looks black but when held up to the light turns translucent brown....and it's an American pressing.

OK, so if I understand correctly, Rockadelic, the OP is asking for examples of vinyl that looks black but is translucent if you hold it up to a strong light source. I love seeing all the cool colored/clear vinyl people are including in this thread, but I don't think that was the OP's intent. I too, would love to see a listing of vinyl pressings that look black, but are actually translucent "Quiex" type vinyl. Am I correct in assuming that this is what Rockadelic is looking for? ::confused:

Here's my example: Talking Heads - Fear of Music. I sorted through 30 or 40 black vinyl copies of this record before I finally found one that light shone through. If I'm not mistaken, this means that it's an unlabeled Quiex pressing, which fits the bill of what the OP is looking for. Make sense? Carry on.
