This includes requests for recommendations for recordings of particular works/composers, etc. We have lots of friendly, respectful and knowledgeable members who will be glad to help you out.

Rosen sounds more animated in the opening and scherzo of Beethoven's 31st sonata than in his remake a few years later.

 

No, for sure since I went with my wife and I had not met her in the 90s.

You 're right, I found the information online, the concert that I had been was in 1999 and apparently he played Schumann, Chopin, and Ravel.

Is that another first time Brahms listen? One of my favourite early(-ish) Brahms works.

 

No, I have a number of other performances of those works (Serkin/Rostropovich, Backhaus/Fournier and Ax/Ma.) Love 'em!

 

Perfect time of the year for Brahms chamber music.

George, thanks for the recommendation on the Zimmerman Chopin I. Turns out it is the favorite of a certain friend of mine.

Got this today, and enjoying it quite a lot:

Now listening to some historical performances of Beethoven sonatas by Paderewski, Gieseking, Kempff, Backhaus, Arrau, Moiseiwitsch and Horowitz. Great transfers and many unique performances! Like Kempff's 1943 Op. 31/3. Man, this one has some youthful pep missing from his two later recordings of this work for DG.

 

As luck would have it, just yesterday I started editing my set of the Moritz Rosenthal performance of this work. Very peculiar layout: a mix of 10" and 12" records, all stored in a 12" album with nothing but 12" sleeves; those for the smaller records are glued inside to yield a smaller pocket. Mixed size sets were uncommon to begin with, but this is the only one I've encountered that modified 12" sleeves instead of binding 10" sleeves into the album for the 10" records. George, I think you mentioned playing a commercial dub of this set a while back. Does your copy happen to specify the recording date? A cursory glance online yielded 1930, but the orchestral part of the recording sounds older to my ear, and I'm wondering if 1930 was a release year for a recording that had sat on the shelf for a while.

This Serkin-Slava DG is a masterpiece. These are my preferred chamber works by Brahms.

 

I have a lot of respect for Andante not only for their choice of music and performers but also for the sound quality of their releases. I don't have the cd that you mentioned, George, but I have quite a few other recordings from Andante and have never been disappointed.

Anyway, ditto on Debussy.

 

Yeah, they do great work.

Same studio, L'Art du Son, does all EMI France classical boxed sets.

 

Interesting, given the compression I found recently on the EMI France Poulenc piano box.
