Isis Magazine has some news about the next volume of the Bootleg Series:
Strange as it may seem, I'm rather excited about this.

Strange choice. This will be the 2nd one in a row that doesn't appeal much to me.

Cool, I hope they package it with a bonus disc and a pointless booklet and charge $150. I'll save more money that way.

They wouldn't dare to do that, Mike. Would they?

Self-Portrait material? A bold move, but I'd get it.

I've enjoyed all the Bootleg Series releases so far but if this concentrates solely on the "Self Portrait" outtakes then I think it'll be the first that I decide not to buy.

I've always liked both Self Portrait & Dylan. I'd welcome more material from those sessions.

I think this is one of the most fascinating periods of Dylan's catalog, whether the resulting music is considered 'good' or not. This release should be interesting, maybe it will show things in a different light and have a few surprises. Would be good if it covered the entire 'recluse' period (67-73).

Of course, I will get it, but if this happens, I will be mildly disappointed.

I think that would be a winner. A few choice tracks from the occasional sessions and one off live appearances over this period would be pretty enjoyable.

As usual on these threads, the thread title should contain the word "rumor".

They're all "discussions". Rumor threads should be marked "rumor", so when we do thread searches in the future, we're not misled. Not to mention being misled today.

I think that if they included the complete from-the-master-tapes version of the Isle Of Wight concert, that this would be an exciting set. Whether you think Dylan and the Band's performance was fabulous or lousy, that concert was still an iconic moment in rock history. All of British rock's elite were in attendence. I happen to think that they really rocked on "Highway 61" and the rendition of "Wild Mountain Thyme" was a masterpiece.

Could it be that there are better takes in the archives from this period than what was issued officially?

God, I hope not! Might be the first new Dylan release I don't buy in 20 years!

I remember Dylan claimed once that the songs on Self Portrait were warm-ups they played before getting to the main material from those sessions (although info so far suggests the main material was only early takes of New Morning songs).

I don't think there's anything interesting about this period, other than him not being all that concerned with making good records. It's like he unplugged from the Bob Dylan muse and walked around his backyard for a few years.

While it is much better than Self Portrait, I also would not be very excited about New Morning outtakes.

I know rumors and speculation can still result in definitive opinions around here like "I'm not buying it", but any Dylan fan should know you never really know what you're going to get until you hear it. If the rumor is true, there is still a good possibility these recordings could be worthwhile. Remember, 1969-1970 resulted in Nashville Skyline, New Morning, and Happy Traum tracks (on Greatest Hits Vol 2). All of which are excellent in my opinion.
