I have a CD by Lonnie Johnson, a star in the 40s and early 50s, that was made when Prestige Records found him in 1960 working as a janitor in a school. They bought him a new guitar, and had him cut the sessionan album at Ven Gelder studios. The next day, he was back sweeping floors . . . An obscure recording, if not an obscure artist.

The most esoteric music that I buy everything of that I can get my hands on is the work of the composer Sorabji. His work is certainly not unknown in the world of 20th century classical piano music, but only a small proportion of it has been recorded, performed or even transcribed. I doubt that his complete music will be available in the lifetime of most forum members.

Historical maybe Mildred Bailey or Ike Quebec. Current maybe Super 400 a great power trio from upstate NY. It is so hard to say I like Jonathan Richman too. Obscure in a musically sophisticated crowd like this one is tough to define.

Charlie Patton, James Booker, The Electronic Music Camerata or Rolf LIivsefeld are all probably known by lots of people here. I'll never be too hip for the room on this forum.

    Bay Area band Inside Out.
I love their concept albums (The Buddies of St. Lewis and Earth Decides) and some of their "regular" albums (Railway Kings. Osgood Road and You Look Too Happy).

Historically, another vote for Mildred Bailey. Love the 10 disc Mosaic box set.

Secret Sounds of the Sonic Six - magnificent LA based band, no idea how to describe their tunes.

I listen to quite a lot of Japanese music so even the most popular bands over there are relatively obscure overseas.

For western bands I have quite mainstream tastes but there are a couple of more obscure bands I really love...

Rheostatics - Canadian prog-rock/pop band. Really something.

Voyager - 70's British prog-pop band, a bit like Queen and a bit like ELO, made 3 albums and they're all really enjoyable.

The Legendary Jim Ruiz Group - 90's bossa.nova-ish pop music. Some really great and quirky songs. Only made 2 albums though.

Midget - 90s power-pop band for the UK. Made a few albums but their first two, and particularly the second album 'Jukebox' is one of my favourite power-pop albums.

The Pursuit of Happiness - A couple of Todd Rundgren produced albums and a couple more, a great pop/rock band with really funny lyrics and lots of Maj/Min7s.

Moxy Fruvous - A Canadian band with a sense of humour and a really unusual sense of harmony. Very melodic and quirky.

David Devant & His Spirit Wife - Made a couple of albums in the 90s of which the first one, 'Work, Lovelife, Misc.', is the best. Bowie-esque vocals with an art-school sensibility and theatrical stageshows, prog-esque angular brit-pop-ish songs with a great sense of humour. 'David' went on to record as 'Mr. Solo'. Unique.

One of my favourite bands is The Tubes but I don't think they're really that obscure.
