Paul McCartney was rumored to be the bass player for Dave Grohl and Josh Homme's band, Them CrookedVultures. For some reason, it didn't happen. They "settled" forJohn Paul Jones, instead.

Actually it was in 1989, after the joint tour in 1987, when he proposed joining the band. According to the bio Down The Highway only one member of the band (Lesh) voted against having him join.

 

I thought I had read somewhere that Iggy Pop was rumored to join the Doors after Jim Morrison's death. That certainly would've been interesting...

 

Robert Palmer and Bonnie Raitt were asked to join Little Feat after Lowell George's death.
And Steve Stills asked Stevie Winwood to join CS&N before going for NY.
Tom Petty asked Dave Grohl to sit on the Heartbreakers drummer's stool after Stan Lynch left.

 

Harvey Mandel could have had Ronnie Wood spot in 1975,He was Jagger's choice.obviously not Keef's.

 

I've not heard this one - curious to know where it comes from. Would it have been after Exposure?

 

Shuggie Otis was apparently offered the second guitar slot for the Stones' 1975 tour but declined.

 

Apparently Jimmy Barnes from Australia was on the short list to join Van Halen after being recommended to them by Bob Clearmountain. But Michael Anthony's friendship with Sammy Hagar ensured he got the gig.

DS: Who actually named Led Zeppelin? I've heard that both John Entwistle and
Keith Moon claim to have thought up the name.

JP: It was Moon, I'm sure, despite anything Entwistle may have said. In fact,
I'm quite certain Richard Cole asked Moon for his permission when we
decided to use the name. Entwistle must have just been upset that the
original Led Zeppelin never took off.

DS: What original Led Zeppelin?

JP: We were going to form a group called Led Zeppelin at the time of "Beck's
Bolero" sessions with the lineup from that session. It was going to be
me and Beck on guitars, Moon on drums, maybe Nicky Hopkins on piano. The
only one from the session who wasn't going to be in it was Jonesy, who
had played bass. Instead, Moon suggested we bring in Entwistle as bassist
and lead singer as well, but after some discussion we decided to use
another singer. The first choice was Stevie Winwood, but it was decided
that he was too heavily committed to Traffic at the time and probably
wouldn't be too interested. Next, we thought of Steve Marriott. He was
approached and seemed to be full of glee about it. A message came from
the business side of Marriott, though, which said, "How would you like to
play guitar with broken fingers? You will be if you don't stay away from
Stevie." After that, the idea sort of fell apart. We just said, "Let's
forget about the whole thing, quick." Instead of being more positive
about it and looking for another singer, we just let it slip by. Then the
Who began a tour, the Yardbirds began a tour and that was it.

Remembering that session when we did "Bolero," the band seemed to be
almost tied up; it was really close to happening.

 

Plus, Eddie Jobson was asked to replace Wakeman, the first time, and was an actual member of the 90125 band for about a week (discussed in recent thread).

Also, Clapton wanted Winwood in Cream, but Bruce & Baker were dead set on the band being a trio.

A well documented story that circulated for years, was that Pete Townshend asked Eddie Phillips to join The Who as second guitarist. Eddie has said that he was never asked.

 

Roy Wood joining Renaissance in the 90's (He did play on the Tuscany album but not as a full member).

Ringo was rumored to be joining the Beach Boys in the 80s, when he did record and play live with them.

Greg Lake was rumored to be joining the Who when he played on the first post-Entwistle tracks.

 

In 1989, while Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe was going on, Chris Squire tried to create a rival Yes with Roger Hogson on vocals and involvement from Trevor Rabin and Billy Sherwood.

 

Peter Green was considered to take Duane's place in the Allmans -
apparently (says Butch Trucks) they couldn't get in touch with him.
There was also talk of Eric Clapton stepping in for the late, great
Brother.....

Guitar legend Danny Gatton turned down John Fogerty's offer after Creedence Clearwater Revival folded.

 

He played bass on "Real Good Looking Boy," but are you sure that it was something more than just a guest appearance?

 

I don't think it was ever a real rumor but the local DJ said David Gilmour was joining Supertramp during the BWYB sessions. At least we got 1 good guitar solo out of it.

 

This doesn't fit this thread to a 'T', but Alice Cooper and Joe Perry DID do some writing and recording together in 1984 before Joe rejoined Aerosmith and while Alice was in the midst of his 'drying out/getting well' phase 'post DaDa.' I would love to hear this someday.
