    Road Trips: Vol. 3, Number 4: Penn State/Cornell May 6 & 7, 1980

    Here’s the existing dual-purpose SHF thread on this one (reflecting simultaneous release of “Formerly The Warlocks” and “Road Trips Vol 3 #4”);

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=226077&highlight=grateful+dead

    This 1980 Road Trips would have sat in post #715, a week before “Go To Nassau”. They were out flogging the recently released (April) “Go To Heaven” album, and Brent’s keyboard sound had most noticeably shifted from the ‘plinkety-plink’ piano sound of the late ’79 tours to this more Hammond organ sound of this Spring ’80 tour.

    This 3cd set features a hybrid first set, and most of the two second sets of the back-to-back nights. It is a good companion to the Nassau set in that there’s a high energy “The Other One” set from the first night, and a slightly mellower “Terrapin” and odd combo of “Space>Saint Of Circumstance>Black Peter” in the “Playin’” sandwich the second night.

    One of the sonic treats of this edition is the prominence of the guitars and general spatial soundstage. There are some deserved fan grumblings that the speed is 2% out, so hopefully the powers that be will be more vigilant, but it IS a very pleasing sounding release IMHO.

    “Formerly The Warlocks”; Hampton Oct 8 & 9, 1989

    Here’s the existing dual-purpose SHF thread on this one (reflecting simultaneous release of “Formerly The Warlocks” and “Road Trips Vol 3 #4”);

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=226077&highlight=grateful+dead

    As luck or foresight would have it, this particular run (and a picture of “The Warlocks” marquee) are featured in post #791, and would have appeared in post #792 just a week before “Nightfall Of Diamonds”. The GD were on tour recording gigs in 24-track for what was to become the 89-90 live album “Without A Net”. In fact, “Eyes Of The World” from WAN is from this first night, but the mixes are noticeably different.

    This gig, of course, was the legendary ‘stealth gig’ to sidestep a Hampton ban on GD shows under the moniker “The Warlocks”, a nod to a very early Bill Graham show poster “Formerly The Warlocks” to clarify to fans the name change to Grateful Dead. Despite all the secrecy to keep this gig low-key and shake loose the growing throngs of ticketless tour heads, GD proceeded to make it memorably high-key and re-introduce “Help On The Way”, “Dark Star” (not played since ’84, and greeted with enthusiasm normally reserved for the second coming of Christ), and “Attics Of My Life” (not played since ’72!). Undoubtedly a historic run, but strongly stands on it’s own musically. I find it fascinating that two “Dark Star”s a mere week apart (this and “Nightfall Of Diamonds”) can be so different in length, composition, and temperament.

    The ‘Virginia tobacco box’ packaging is rather inspired, to say the least.

    For fall 1989 shows, I'd love to see the Miami run 10/25-26/89 — 21 years ago today— released. IMO, the best of the latter day Dark Stars. Great shows although Garcia's voice was pretty shot.

    Apologies if this has been answered - my search didn't turn up what I wanted - but how are the sonics from the Rhino "Go to Nassau" May 1980 2-disc from around 2002?
    Thanks all.

    Ooops, sorry we missed this a month back. "Go To Nassau" was a multi-track as opposed to many of the 2-track archive releases, so is good quality. The sound is album quality and very differently mixed to the King Biscuit broadcast of some of the same material.

    Road Trips: Vol 4, Number 1: Big Rock Pow Wow 69

    This one shared a thread (as they have on simul-releases) with JGAB “Ragged But Right”;
    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=230950&highlight=grateful+dead

    This one fits just after post #199, the April ’69 releases Download 12 & Dicks Pick’s 26, but before their appearance on the expanded Woodstock set. This set was a huge fave of mine on hoary old cassette. This is an outdoor festival (they were quite the festival regular in those days) recorded quite crisply by Bear. The first day features a nice “Dark Star>Stephen>Eleven>Lovelight” which was a powerful staple of the day, though some collectors may tire of that repetitive combination. The second set is the real meat IMHO, with a loooong raging guitar-driven Lovelight (the organ was on the fritz), then an unusual couple medleys. The solo out of “He Was A Friend Of Mine” interestingly mutates into an early “Chinacat”, which barrels into “The Eleven” and a raw angry “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”. The second half has a standalone “Stephen” sandwiched out of “Drums” and into “Feedback”. As with many sets this era, their sound-system is allowing them to experiment with clarity and dynamics from a whisper to a roar. This is very raw ‘primal’ Dead and honestly not everybody’s cup of tea, but if you can put yourself ‘there’ in the place and year you’ll hear the powerful and legendary Good Ol’ Grateful Dead in their synaptic crusade.

    Road Trips Vol 4.2 - 4/1/88 (&3/31) Brendan Byrne Arena

    ‘Housekeeping/update’ time again as a couple upcoming new releases are already in pre-order stages. Here’s the existing SHF thread for this recent release;

    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=238597&highlight=grateful+dead+road+trips

    This show (all of April Fool’s, and a full 2nd set and a couple 1st set tunes from the previous night’s show) fit in post #773, just days after DownLoad #5 from Hampton Coliseum 3/27/88. As the blurb goes, the G Dead spent ’87 recovering their chops from the 1986 Jerry-coma break, dabbled with Dylan, and coped with the surprise mega-success of “In The Dark”. By 1988 they were playing quite masterfully again, and few band members were already midi-equipped, with Garcia yet to take the plunge.

    Though interest in this release arguably suffered from being lumped with a proliferation of 89 shows (and the inclusion of “Mr Fantasy/Hey Jude” which many find tedious), this year was previously under-represented and IMHO is more interesting performance-wise than most of 1987. The rare cover of Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man” is a drawcard (though previously released on the Dylan cover compilation “Postcards Of The Hanging), and the sets are nevertheless quite nice.

    Here’s the dual purpose SHF thread covering a dual release of Fall/Winter ’73 shows;

    Both these releases fit in the chapters #508 and #509 with Donna popping out, in, and finally out for maternity reasons. The Denver release is a whole mellow show, which will leave the listener a bit mellower afterwards as well (it’s contagious!). The Denver show occurs just a dozen days after the Winterland box run, and 10 days prior to DP 14.

    2011 Road Trips bonus disc –Dec 6, 1973

    Era and thread as above, 2 nights after the Dec 4 Cincinnati bonus disc that came with the November Winterland box, and another slab of ’73 quintet GD (sans Donna vocals for a different vocal blend). Though only part of a show, and a cut medley at that, the music that’s here is awfully nice with an extended GSET, and a very jazzy Dark Star.

    Road Trips 4.4 - Complete Philly Spectrum 4/6/82 (& 4/5/82)

    The Europe 72 archive releases (box, compilation vol 2, individual shows) are still being announced and released, so that ginormous batch will come soon. With a new RT announced today it’s time for catch up of past releases.

    IF THIS GD THREAD HAD BEEN A CHRONOLOGICAL TIMELINE WITH DROPDOWN BOXES FOR RELEASES, PHOTOS AND NEWSCLIPS/INTERVIEWS/ESSAYS BY ERA OR SPECIFIC DATES (c’mon Rhino/GDM, take a hint! It’ll be cool. Ya know ya wanna!) this release would be found in posts 748-749 before Dicks Picks #32 from August ‘82.

    The existing SHF post is;
    http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=256587&highlight=road+trips
    ..so feel free to post there if you get around to listening to this.

    This ’82-’86 era is as yet still underrepresented by official releases. Brent was well and truly ‘broken in’ by this point (and new tunes for what would become ‘In The Dark’ would start to appear in shows by end of the year). While there’s some debate as to how hi the fi actually is on this release (mostly enjoyed by those posting), there’s been no dispute that this was a well performed show and nice rich setlist. As is the fate with each new Dick’s Picks or Road Trips, there’s always another release that might’ve been preferred from a different year, but someday you’ll yank this one off the shelf and spin it and go “Awww, yeah!” (I think my only miniscule and undefendable beef was that they generously added some bonus tracks from the previous night right after deep Space on Disc 2 which was slightly jarring/incongruous.)

    MAGIC TRIP - Ken Kesey & The Merry Pranksters 1964 and furthur

    Another 2011 release is the loooooooong overdue general public release of the famed Merry Pranksters psychedelic bus film The Merry Pranksters Search For A Cool Place. This rejigging of the ancient Acid Test/Prankster archive footage is done documentary style, but the clarity of the footage is something to behold indeed. While not a Grateful Dead release strictly speaking, early GD does make an appearance, and you’ll literally see Cowboy Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never-Ever Land. You can’t get much more ‘primal Dead’ than that, eh?

    Posts 45-47 (and surrounds) of this GD thread covered this stage of the GD’s development.

    An existing SHF thread on this film’s release appears here;

    And here is the film’s website including the film trailer for a taste of the visuals;

    About The Film
    Alex Gibney and Alison Ellwood’s MAGIC TRIP is a freewheeling portrait of Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster’s fabled road trip across America in the legendary Magic Bus. In 1964, Ken Kesey, the famed author of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” set off on a legendary, LSD-fuelled cross-country road trip to the New York World’s Fair. He was joined by “The Merry Band of Pranksters,” a renegade group of counterculture truth-seekers, including Neal Cassady, the American icon immortalized in Kerouac’s “On the Road,” and the driver and painter of the psychedelic Magic Bus. Kesey and the Pranksters intended to make a documentary about their trip, shooting footage on 16MM, but the film was never finished and the footage has remained virtually unseen. With MAGIC TRIP, Gibney and Ellwood were given unprecedented access to this raw footage by the Kesey family. They worked with the Film Foundation, HISTORY and the UCLA Film Archives to restore over 100 hours of film and audiotape, and have shaped an invaluable document of this extraordinary piece of American history.

    Europe ’72 Complete Recordings Box Set,… & more!

    (Time for some more overdue housekeeping; a chapter on recent hi-fi and video re-issues will follow).

    The legendary Europe ‘72 tour (previously discussed/described in post #438, and subsequent previous releases posts 439-441) has now produced a deluxe rock n’ roll box set of undeniably epic proportions and a fat swag of individual product offshoots. If you’re in a posting mood, it also spawned a healthy number of threads;

    The long and short of it is that this tour has always been long held in esteem by fans as both particularly well-played, and where many of the tunes for a proposed third GD album in the ‘Ramble On Rose trilogy’ finally appeared (along with the lp’s ‘Ace’ and ‘Garcia’). There have been many theories over the years as to why the performances were so uniformly pristine; such as quieter and perhaps more discerning virgin audiences, or a huge culture infusion into the band’s psyche as they traveled, but perhaps a big reason was far more mundane as Weir described in a promotional interview last year; “One thing in particular occurs to me: For that tour, everybody was pretty damn clear. Unlike in America, you couldn't get pot over there. They had hashish. And nobody liked it much. So there wasn't a lot of smoking going on. The crew were big drinkers, but the guys in the band were not. All we had was the music.” Oh well, then. Whatever the reason, the septet of Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron (Pigpen) McKernan, Bob Weir, and new recruits Keith & Donna Godchaux laid down a raft of great recordings, issued in part over the years as the original Warners 3lp Europe 72 set (and a ‘Dark Star’ side on a private label), The Hundred Year Hall, Rockin’ The Rhein, and the Steppin’ Out British gig compilation. But it wasn’t enough for your dyed-in-the-wool Dead Heads, obviously.

    The concept of a full tour box had long been only a pipe-dream. Then sometime around April of 2007 or 2008 (IIRC) a curious viral email made the rounds describing an upcoming ‘50 disc every-note-played Europe 72 set, with bonus disc of a bonfire jam with members of Traffic on a south France beach recorded by some intrepid fan’. Instead of instantly dismissing it as an April Fool’s gag, everyone carefully did the math and decided that the hours weren’t quite sufficient unless there was a glitch somewhere. Some were financially frightened by the idea, but others said “Bring it on!” There was interest!

    Fast forward a few years, and we get an announcement that a 60 disc set is in the works with compilation producer Davis Lemieuxand mixing engineer Jeffrey Norman. Despite the huge success of the Fillmore 69 box, a project this size was uncharted territory for anyone in the rock world, and the pre-order process was more like an expression of interest; the bottom line was that the pre-orders had to reach 7200 to make it viable. Amazingly, it sold out fairly quickly in pre-order, and got the green-light to proceed with the ‘steamer trunk’ box and individual cd jacket designs, book, and other paraphernalia. It is very much to their credit that someone decided to have each show run chronologically rather than chopping them and re-sequencing them to fit on 2 or 3 discs as had occurred on the previous Frankfurt and Munich sets. At no extra cost, the set expanded from 60 discs to the magic number 72!

    The day of reckoning finally arrived with the big world-wide mail-out of the boxes which were very well received. The packing was beautiful (the book is particularly nice), but the music performances and sound were terrific (there were occasional gripes about ripping covers or the nature of the ambience on some vocals). 7200 individualized deluxe boxes weren’t enough to go around, so a further ‘music-only’ set was offered for sale, AND a highlights 2cd set called “Europe 72 Vol 2”, THEN the individual concerts offered individually for sale by deadnet.com (not to mention t-shirts and stickers of all the individual covers!).

    Everyone will have their faves. There are the obvious ones (see the poll and discussion threads). I was surprised by the extra PITB and funny false starts on the Beat Club tape. Probably the raspiest performance is the outdoor Bickershaw Festival which was plagued by bad weather and huge kerosene heaters putting the guitars out of tune and making players dizzy, but I tested it a couple months back and assure you that all the cozmik audio hieroglyphics have come down intact from 1972 to the present day.

    4/26/72 streaming today at dead.net. Is the SQ improved from the 100 Year Hall release?

    I haven't gotten to the trunk version of 4/26 yet - when I do I'll compare and post. 4/26 is probably the best show of the tour, and if it ain't that, it's easily the best Other One!

    WOW! Been getting into the Dead over the last few years, just picked up their first album, and searched to find this thread. I'm only through the first 6 pages, but what a job by Jackson to put this together and the stories told to be "written in ink" on the Internet for the current and future Dead fans to read. I am enjoying this thread and the music immensely as I follow along swapping the albums on the turntable as I read.

    I'm actually amazed this still hasn't got to part 2. With all those Road Trips and Dick's Picks still being released as we speak/type it will be a near impossibility to get this thread finished!

    Old thread I know, but I remember hearing both of these as cassette filler 25 or so years ago, would love to hear again. Never knew the source.

    I hate to revive such an old thread, but I've been making my way through all the Dead threads here, and well, I can't let this go. Heck, someone may have pointed it out on the next page of the thread which I have yet to read.

    There were some answers, but I mean, it had to be "GARCIA" right? I didn't see anyone immediately point to this anywhere. It couldn't have been anything else...:tsk:

    Yes, definitely Garcia. Someone in another thread said "BERTHA" but, c'mon, it was obvious. I hope they were joking. I've been very gradually making my way through this thread, there's a wealth of info here (I'm up to '75 right now), and I've been inspired to dig out some stuff I hadn't heard in years, including Mickey's Rolling Thunder album (Relix Records '80s reissue) that I probably hadn't played since 1988 or so... Playing In the Band (or, The Main Ten) with the Tower of Power horns, I'd forgotten all about that cool old nugget.

    I was hoping they were joking, but it really didn't seem like it :shake:

    I'm just getting into 1970. The info up to then has been pretty cool. You listen to a lot of Dead? What years do you like?
