This weekend I finally got to see a movie I had in my Netflix queue for quite some time, The Girl Next Door. This is not the movie with Elisha Cuthbert but rather a based on a true story of a teenage girl and her sister who have to live with an Aunt due to the death of their parents and the torture they went through.

This movie is extremely disturbing and difficult to get through. How they got those kids to do the things they did (in the movie) is mind-baffling.

I spoke of this a tad in The Last Movie You Watched thread and thought it may make a good thread of it's own.

I also saw Compliance recently, also based on a true story. Amazing what sick and stupid people there are out there. Never knew this sort of thing existed.

BTW, please do not watch these movies with kids around. The ad said Horror/Thriller but it's really deep and dark and sick.

So, what disturbing movies have you seen?

Yeah, that was a sick film. My wife walked out of the room but I toughed it out. I thought it was pretty good.

Ladies and gentlemen, presenting... The Human Centipede:

There isn't enough money to pay me to watch this crap. I had to work on Last House on the Left and a couple of other films like that in the 1980s, and those were bad enough. This is worse.

To me, there's "disturbing" and then there's DISTURBING. Torture-porn goes over the line for me.

Trust me...Human Centipede is Romper Room compared to the one I'm referring to.

Two good documentaries come to mind. First, Grizzly Man, directed by Werner Herzog. It's available on Amazon Prime in HD for free:

Next, Deep Water, a documentary about an Englishman, Donald Crowhurst, who attempts to sail around the world in a race in 1968-1969, but....

I have a much lower threshold for this kind of thing than most otherwise open-minded cinephiles. I don't doubt for a second I would not survive any of the films named above. (EDIT: The Herzog documentary posted above, while I was writing this, is an exception, a fine film.) The torture-porn stuff in particular I regard as the nadir of wretchedness.

For a long time I had wanted to watch "Event Horizon." The basic idea sounded like a cool sci-fi plot to me. I finally saw it last year and immediately wished I hadn't. Actually I had started it once, alone, and then shut it off after about 15 minutes. Then my brother visited and foolishly I gave it another go, this time all the way through . . . I'm sure this is "Lassie Come Home" compared to y'all's picks above.

I left the theater with about 10 minutes remaining in "Hannibal." It was during the scene in the kitchen, for those of you who remember it. I told my date and cousin I'd meet them in the lobby, and was happy I did. I felt scummy enough for having watched it up to that point. More recently at "The Hills Have Eyes" (2006) at the moment the burning man appeared I stood up in dramatic fashion and shouted to all and sundry, "That's it! I'm out of here!" This time the date (a different one :)) followed.

Going way back -- and this is not a horror/gore thing, but just an upsetting and disturbing film narratively -- I remember more than 20 years ago seeing something called "The Reflecting Skin" on home video. I wonder if anyone else has seen that. What an upsetting, bleak picture of a kid's life that was.

A very good documentary. Re the current topic, I think he was wise to have presented Treadwell's final audio recording the way he did.

You ever see Steve Martin's 2001 film Novocaine? That's a black comedy about a dentist who gets mixed up in murder, and winds up having to fake his own death... and he has to pull out all his own teeth, plant them in a corpse, and then set the building on fire so that this body is found, making it look like Steve Martin's character died. Very hard movie to watch, especially the scene where pulls out all 32 of his own teeth. I worked on that for a week or two back then. Marathon Man was only slightly more disturbing.

Oh, that's actually a fun film for some of the time. But I knew what to expect. The novel is much more disturbing!

Horror movies don't really disturb me, they're sick but most of them are so over the top that I can't relate to them on any real level, so it's just mindless to me. But, some movies about odd or strange or disenfranchised people really disturb me, movies like Gummo or documentary's about the West Memphis 3 or older twisted movies like Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, this stuff is disturbing to me.

Hannibal-the movie was child's play compared to watching Hannibal Rising-where it tries to 'understand-justify' how Lecter -first as a child- became who he was. Not the usual version of it - but instead the East Europeon release version. It is far stronger than some other 'cuts' of the movie. Cannibalism of a child, anyone??!!
Then there is that incredibly sickening Wolf Creek ,that Australian sick torture -horror piece that I happened to come by in a bargain twofer DVD buy. I found that- was not the the type of "bargain" I was looking for. Now I see they are making Wolf Creek 2.

Vidiot : You might be able to fill us in, on a rumour that was floating around at the time. Th rumour being, that with Marathon Man, Paramount made extensive editing cuts to the dentistry torture scenes -before it was released.

I look past the associated 'horror plot devices' of a film like "Baby Jane" and see it as a dark comedy. . Instead, appreciate how it also really depicts, the every day recalled but present delusions of people that were once "famous" for some reason - one has personally across, in real life.
Those who have become macabre fossilised versions of what they supposedly, once were. Botoxed, face-lifted tragics already -embalmed corpses to boot, in some cases.
