"I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!"
Scooby Doo was one of the great kids cartoons.

From the liner notes of the Rhino Merry-Go-Round LP:

Definitely some great production (and playing) on that track.

Sorry to hear about this. I'll put on either The Gilded Palace of Sin, or Burrito Deluxe later in his honor. RIP.

There's a great story in Marc Eliot's "Death of a Rebel" about Eliot going to see Marks to talk about Phil Ochs's "Pleasures of the Harbor". Eliot only had a short time allotted for his appointment and Marks was a busy guy. They started to play the record and Marks said "I'd forgotten how beautiful this record is", and pushed all his other commitments aside so they could listen to the whole thing (it's a long record, almost an hour) while Marks reminisced about his relationship with Ochs.

I have a couple 45s by Larry Marks (on A & M records)," L.A. Breakdown" and "Move" (from a 1970 movie starring Elliott Gould).

Pleasures... and Tape From California which Marks also had a hand in are, for me, the best Phil Ochs albums by a wide margin, and Marks had a lot to do with that.

I love Pleasures Of The Harbor and I know Larry really worked hard on it. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I had forgotten he wrote that as well...I could swear that there was a popular version out by another artist that I heard back in the early 70s but I sure don't remember who it was.

I never would have guessed that the guy who sang the Scooby-Doo theme also co-produced The Gilded Palace Of Sin.

    RIP.

I cued up Gene Clark's first solo album earlier today. Larry produced half of that record.

That's why I love this forum. I never knew it was Larry Marks who sang the Scooby Doo theme song until today!

Jack Jones covered it (I love his interpretation), but maybe you're thinking of Helen Reddy? Her version was on I Don't Know How to Love Him (1971), produced by Marks.

He also wrote the Merry-Go-Round song "Missing You", and presumably played piano on it.

I saw the thread title and knew that I knew the name but just couldn't place it initially. It's the Ochs connection for me - he really did a great job on those albums. RIP Larry!

Marks did not want to do the third Ochs album(he was moving into TV and films), but Phil talked him into it. In a lot of ways Rehearsals For Retirement is my favorite Ochs album and his last with Phil.

    RIP Larry Marks

Yes indeed, I love those albums too. Talk about someone long overdue for a reissue campaign.

  25. Sad to read of Larry's passing. He was truly a wonderful man. Always willing to talk with me. I had the pleasure of interviewing him on several projects and he was always very candid and insightful. Last time I saw him we had lunch in a funky little roadhouse just south of Santa Barbara. He definitely left his mark on music.
