    I know. ;)

I just wish I could have been there with a 24-bit recorder when "The Genius of Ray Charles" was being recorded...

You're welcome. I'm a fountain of useless knowledge.

I think the damage there was done before it ever hit a tape machine. No Ampex machine ever distorted like that. That's the sound of a bad mic pre in a bad console. The sound was ruined even before it ever hit tape.

Ah … interesting. I love the record but the sound is terrible. Doesn't stop me from enjoying it though.

Yup, one of the best albums ever made. As I mentioned in my bitch thread, the first Atlantic stereo LP cutting is the most tuneful. It adds some valve goodness and midrange 3D that is lacking on the actual master tape.

I'll have to track that down. I've been enjoying that MoFi mono recently. Still over-modulated like heck, though.

Try and find it. A more pleasant listening experience.

Funny this thread popped up now. I got both volumes of the DCC "His Greatest Hits" recently and was playing V1 as this thread appeared!

But I'm confused - both sets weren't totally remixed? The credits say "Digitally Remixed and Remastered by Ray Charles and Steve Hoffman", but that's only true for a couple of songs?

Two songs only as I mentioned in my first post.

Yeah, I saw that, but then why do the CDs have the credit that says they were remixed? Am I wrong in thinking the credit implies both CDs were totally remixed? I don't understand why they say "remixed" if they weren't...

BTW, this is the first RC I've owned - digging it more than I thought I would! :righton:

'Cause we were lying bastards. Or, the artwork was finished way before we even met Ray Charles. We relied upon what he told us when he mastered the stuff. When we heard the results we went to meet him and did it all over again using the vintage mixes. The art was never corrected, would have cost too much.

This has been documented here somewhere. Our adventures with Ray.

    Steve,

Why was "BORN TO LOSE" not included in the DCC country album?

  17. Steve Hoffman

Steve Hoffman Your host Your Host Thread Starter

It was. It is song number 7 on the DCC RAY CHARLES "Greatest Country And Western Hits".

Don't know what to tell you, it's track 7 on mine.

Wait, you mean the really old Dunhill silver? I'm talking about the DCC Gold CD GZS-1086.

    YOUR CHEATING HEART
    HEY GOOD LOOKIN'
TAKE THESE CHAINS FROM MY HEART
    MOVE IT ON OVER
    I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU
    JUST A LITTLE LOVIN'
    BORN TO LOSE
    YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE
    YOU DON'T KNOW ME
    DON'T TELL ME YOUR TROUBLES
    TOGETHER AGAIN
SOMEDAY YOU'LL WANT ME TO WANT YOU
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH IT HURTS
    CRYING TIME
    CARELESS LOVE
I'LL NEVER STAND IN YOUR WAY
    BYE BYE LOVE
    MAKING BELIEVE
    IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE NOW
    DON'T LET HER KNOW.

The version you have says there is an alternate take of CARELESS LOVE on it? Can you put it up so I can hear it? Thanks.

Sure. Shall put it up tonight as I don't have access to a computer at the moment. Browsing forum on iPad. :)

Yes, thank you. Much appreciated. Those Dunhill CD's of Ray I haven't heard in many years.

Probably the reason BORN TO LOSE wasn't on the silver Dunhill is due to a conflict with RHINO who had released the same material at the same time (also mastered by me). A legal thing.

I've been listening to "What'd I Say" from my Uh-Huh compilation, and I noticed how much clearer (and less hissy) it is than the same song on a Rhino Greatest Hits I have. I always assumed it was a remix.
