I've been working on this forever and I've finally settled on an order...at least for now. I'm sure I've missed something, but overall I think this is pretty close to definitive for me. I bet some of you might be surprised of what I've included/excluded. 9-Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force Bold, sir! So, walk us through the criteria of how each album was ranked and so forth. I've done my top 25, but never to lengths you went. Interesting!
I've been chipping away at an initial list of 200 or so albums for the past 2 years so this was not an overnight thing. Using the "reorder list" function on the edit page of rateyourmusic, I would just stare at the 15 or so albums that are visible on the screen and I'd drag away...scroll up a bit and continue...and continue...and continue. The first 20-30 were much simpler but how does one differentiate between number 56 and 57? Really, after 30 it's more or less grouped in a more general way.
Who's Next and Beggar's Banquet got chopped somewhere around the 125-150 count mark. I do love these albums a lot but I have a pretty wide taste. If I were just a rocker they would probably make the cut. Even though I probably own 20 Dylan albums, I've never fully embraced him.
Ha! Only on SHMF.tv can you get chastised for not including perceived important artists into your own top 100! Explain yourself, SIR!!
Funny that I didn't see this thread about 5 minutes ago when I was trying to put into words how much a list like this would be appreciated... Excellent timing, I'd say. Thanks again for sharing your Top 100...I've got a streaming site up and my wallet out. This should be incredibly fun (and expensive) to go through!
I have 34 of those albums. Kudos for mentioning Cocteau Twins, The Avalanches and Animal Collective as well as John Coltrane's Ballads.
Unfortunately Pete Namlook WAS an ambient pioneer who tragically died at a young age this past November. He has a pretty amazing story.
I counted up and I have 56 of your 100. I notice you have no repeat artists in your top 100. Thus, each artist & album is unique to the list. I assume that was on purpose?
Seems like an arbitrary restriction for a best albums list. It doesn't accurately reflect what your favorite albums really are.
How is that as weird? That, at least, is an accurate reflection of that person's taste. This isn't. This is just an accurate reflection of your favorite album from 100 different artists. It's definitely a list of something, but I doubt it's really your 100 favorite albums.
I usually reach for Vangelis before Who's Next or Beggar's Banquet or any of that Dylan stuff too. NOT.
