I'm about to push the button on a Japan Hot Rocks 1 P33L 250 11. For $39.99. Anyone care to try and stop me? I just can't take it anymore. Here I go.

Ok, good. Thanks. As for the P33L 25011. Is this as good as the apparently almost extinct German original?

There is also a P25L pressing which was released between these.

BTW, the first pressings for both "More Hot Rocks" CDs are P25L.

Thanks. I'm only interested in Hot Rocks 1 right now. Do you know if the mastering is the same throughout on the above mentioned Japan pressings? Specifically POCD 1927 and the P33L 25011, which are on Ebay up for bid right now and I've waited long enough for this cd. I feel I have anyway.

    I haven't heard the POCD.

I've got a POCD 1927 - it has no fade ups, and thus is the one to get, as are any of the London/Polygram Hot Rocks 1 cd's made in Japan. The later German pressings are the ones to avoid because they have the fadeups.

If you're interested in getting the early Stones stuff in stereo on CD, you really should give this a good read if you haven't already. Compiled by Luke Pacholski and David Goodwin:

    http://www.lukpac.org/stereostones/stones-cd-faq.txt

This is another great site forum member lukpac put together--all about the sources for early Stones in true stereo. Even has 30 second sound clips:

Wow, thanks guys!! Thanks Aftermath. I think they're all good. (Early Japan pressings I mean) early ones I guess. Loved the Luke thread. Read it several times now. Still awesome to go back over. The second thread you linked me, has me creaming in my panties. I have to have these stereo pressings. The sound bites are awesome.

Does anyone think $39.99 is too high to pay for Japan Hot Rocks 1?

You should ask the seller about matrix number. Anyway, one without fade ups was sold on ebay.de last week as low as 3.50 Euros (appr. $4.50). But (like a lot of German sellers these days) the guy does not accept paypal (only bank transfer within Germany) and had no willing to deal with international orders. So patience, patience and patience once again. You can't always get what you want, but if you try....

When it comes to drop outs. One is really bad. Ruby Tuesday is ruined for sure. It start to fade away gradually at appr. 2.57 (at the last line of the coda) while clocks 3.20. (+- 1 sec.) You can here everything to the very end but low, lower, lower, lower.... There is certain resemblance with Sweet Virginia form CBS. Satisfaction also have similar issue, but not that drastic (1-2 sec. in the end). And it starts with fade in for about 1 sec. Maybe a few other too but those are even less noticeable.

Another issue with Japanese discs. I can not tell you about all discs from P33L, P25L or early POCD series but those I heard are slightly different from German versions in terms of EQ. I mean, they are a little bit louder and a bit more bright. Think Luke and Dave mentioned that somewhere. When it comes to numbers - here we go for Aftermath.

The same tape was used for sure, but the final mix was 'tweaked' for Japanese CD.

Again, Japanese CDs are not cheap. You should deal with it. I believe the price you are willing to pay is a price of a CD. It is just a balance between your craving and seller's covetousness.

PS. Please save appr. $200. You will need them after reading that FAQ of Dave and Luke. That is a price you'll pay for a set of 17 German discs in the better case. Or target for appr. $1000 if you decide to head for Japanese version.

Yes. Long stereo version of ENSTL (5.08) exists. But it was not officially issued on CD. Only as B-Side of Street Fighting Man (1971 UK 7” single) and on Rock ‘N’ Rolling Stones (1972 Decca LP).

Holy crucial droppings Batman, Uhh.. I mean Ironbelly. Thanks! I have read where you have been helpful before (possibly in a different lifetime under a different avatar), (don't ask) but this was very appreciable. However, I have all the SACDs and only feel the need to upgrade a few ABCKO London era discs. Mainly Aftermath, Hot Rocks 1, and More Hot Rocks. Thanks.

Thanks I think. Where exactly did you come up with what price I'm willing to pay?. Are you my accountant? I assure you buddy, I'm willing to pay whatever it's worth. I have no problem with paying any amount. I'm just careful.

I start with that idea too. Just start and you'll never stop.

    ;);););););)
I am not your accountant. I just try to stay positive.

I am married man. I know that this tiny habit (a.k.a. buying old discs) usually cause a real accountant (a.k.a. your wife) tracking you down. And believe me, sometimes it is much worth than IRS, FBI, CIA, KGB, Mossad... you name it... all together. Hellhound on your trail...

    No problem.

Still... Does anybody have any idea what manufacturing facilities were used for so called 6th German pressing? And when those CDs were pressed?

Let me put in this way.

According to http://home.arcor.de/folon2/stones_london_cds.html (Thank you, all guys who contributed) there are 6 German pressings of CDs on London.

The question is - how do these pressings correlate with the time scale in A.C.?

Information on the first pressings could be found easily. For the rest - this is speculation only.

1st pressing (West Germany, Hannover, Polygram)
Black and red face, full tracklist on CD, flat CD, aluminum to the central hole, catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    July 1984
    Beggars Banquet - matrix 800 084-2 02 #
    The Rolling Stones - matrix 820 047-2 01 #

2nd pressing (West Germany, Hannover, Polygram)
Blue and red face, old logo, full tracklist on CD, flat CD, aluminum to the central hole, catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    September 1984
    The Rolling Stones - matrix 820 047-2 01 #
    12 x 5 - matrix 820 048-2 01 #
    Out Of Our Heads - matrix 820 049-2 02 #
    May 1985
    Hot Rocks 1 - matrix 820 141-2 01 *
    Hot Rocks 2 - matrix 820 142-2 01 *

    July 1985
    Aftermath - matrix 820 050-2 01 *
    Between The Buttons - matrix 820 138-2 01 *

March 1986, Everything is the same, but no track list on CD anymore (West Germany, Hanover, Polygram)
    Тheir Satanic Majesties Request - matrix 820 129-2 01 *
    Let It Bleed - matrix 820 052-2 01 *

In the beginning of 1986 Polygram transfer the factory in Hannover to PDO

    ???????
    Hot Rocks 1 - matrix 820 141-2 02 # (with track list)
Hot Rocks 1 - matrix 820 141-2 02 # MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO (without track lists, old logo)
The Rolling Stones - matrix 820 047-2 01 # MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO (without track lists, old logo)

3rd pressing with old logo, no track list, flat CD, aluminum to the central hole, catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    July 1988
All 17 discs including newly issued
    Now! - matrix 820 133-2 01 # MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
    Decembers Children - matrix 820 135-2 01 * MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
got LIVE if you want it! - matrix 820 137-2 01 * MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
    Flowers - matrix 820 139-2 01 * MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
    'Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out!' - matrix 820 131-2 01 * MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
    More Hot Rocks 1 - matrix 820 515-2 01 # MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO
    More Hot Rocks 2 - matrix 820 516-2 01 * MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO

3rd pressing with new logo, no track list, flat CD, aluminum to the central hole, no catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    Probably 1989-1991???
Here we got all 17 CD with Hot Rocks 1 with fade ups and The Rolling Stones with short "Tell Me". In both cases matrix ends with 03.

Another reorganization in 1991, PDO is dissolved, Hannover factory is back under Polygram.

4th pressing with new logo, no track list, I am not sure if CDs all are still flat, aluminum to the central hole, no catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    MADE IN GERMANY on matrix
    Probably 1991-1992????

4th pressing with old logo,no track list, CDs have protective ring around the hub, 2 mm clear plastic around the central hole (at least those 5 I had in hands), no catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
    MADE IN GERMANY on matrix
    Probably 1992-1993????

Somewhere in 1994 Polygram in Germany is renamed to Polygram Manufacturing & Distribution Centers (PMDC)

5th pressing with old logo, no track list, CDs have protective ring around the hub, 2 mm clear plastic around the central hole, no catalog number underneath CD tray (back side of the backcover)
MADE IN GERMANY BY PMDC on matrix
    Probably 1994????

Where to squeeze 6th pressing with old and new logo?

CDs have protective ring around the hub, clear plastic hub, matrix printed partially on the aluminum. There is no ifpi printed on the hub. I.e. those discs were made before 1994. And definitevely, London discs were replaced by ABKCO around that time

Thanks to both of you. OK, I found out where I was confused. Did another check and this was recorded at RCA, not Regent as I'd thought.

Unfortunately, your timing just happens to be bad. I was lucky (one of the few times) as I started picking up London CD's about the time the SACD's came out, when many people out there decided to dump their London's to upgrade, so for awhile there were a fair number of them out there to be had at good prices (so much so that I once picked up a nice copy of Satanic Majesties for just $5.00 on eBay).

You know, it's odd they didn't take the opportunity to include this stereo version on the "Street Fighting Man" disc in the "Singles: 1968-1971" box set, since I'm guessing that disc was trying to partially replicate the UK 7" single by including ENSTL and Surprise, Surprise along with No Expectations.

Seems that would've been an ideal place to release it on CD, unless I'm missing something.

I think they just don't care about all this things. Also they are using US version of catalog all the way but not UK.

There is also another thing - Oldham and 'stereo' do not fit well ;)

PS. 6th West German pressing question without answer yet :)

Got Limited Edition of London CDs from The Netherlands.

The Rolling Stones - Greatest Hits - Hot Rocks 1 & 2 [RSB 820 140-2]. It was marketed by PhonoGram Holland, to promote the Rolling Stones Singles Collection 3 CD box [820 900-2]. It is packed in numbered outer cardboard picture sleeve
    [IMG]
Inside the sleeve there are two regular German London CDs with 12 pages booklets.
Hot Rocks 1 [820 141-2], Matrix 820 141-2 03* MADE IN W GERMANY BY PDO (3rd German pressing, new logo) - with fade ups :(
    [IMG]
    Hot Rocks 2 [820 142-2], Matrix 820142-2 04/ (6th German Pressing, old logo)
Taking The Singles Collection box set [820 900-2] was released in September 1989 (according to Dieter Hoffman), this one should hit the market around the same time or later.

    Anybody knows this one?
