Others here are much more expert than I, but I can't ever recall seeing a WG Polygram CD that wasn't aluminum to the center. Looks fake to me...

I think that is no barcode. I would say, some long line with numbers. Unfortunately, the quality of picture does not allow to read it.

Definitely it is not original WG PolyGram. It could be later pressing (and/or from different factory). They just did not change print on the face. Other than that - it could be a very nice CDR ;).

If you are interested just ask the seller about that line of numbers on the matrix.

I also notice The dash is missing between the Bee Gees - Living Eyes.
Is it possible that the disc on the right is one of those demo discs used in all those "Tomorrows World" type TV programmes in 1981?
I remember Living Eyes being demoed on Tomorrows World UK in 1981.

colinu I'm not lazy, I'm energy saving!

I suspect that there are businesses somewhere that specializes in creating counterfeit discs of out of print titles in small quantities. These discs are then sold on auction sites - one or two every couple of months. They may use commercial grade duplication techniques (discs that are pressed - not CD-Rs, and a commercial printing press - not an inkjet printer) to create batches of say 1000 copies.

Because the discs are out of print, and they limit the number of discs they sell - they maintain high selling prices on these discs, and the operations are too small for authorities to shut down/ they fly below the radar.

A couple of years ago I sold an out of print disc on ebay - Barry Manilow "Barry" - a disc that was only available in Japan. The clientele that would buy this is most likely "mature". When I wouldn't entertain an offer from a potential buyer - their communications became hostile. I ignored them. It got me thinking about why a person in that part of the world would become so demanding over a Barry Manilow CD.

The text spacing and layout (although similar) does not match between the two discs. The 'fake' is not a simple photocopy of the WG original (whatever that means).

It can not be from 1981. The very first CD was presented in 1982. Thus there is no way it was shown on TV program in 1981. I can buy 1983, but not earlier than that.

Funny enough there is very similar image on discogs (although I do not trust them blindly)

Hardly believe this is original PolyGram too.

I believe it is just additional later pressing.

You know, like these. Both are perfectly legit. Both have "Made in West Germany" printed on the face.

Still the question is - where and when those discs with 'clear center' were pressed?

    Interesting post.
Did you notice that the hyphen between "Bee Gees" and "Living Eyes" is missing on the sellers cd.

Right! But still it could be different pressing. Unlike here or on ebay (in some cases) they do not list details about the edition.

I am almost sure that the one carrols has (the one with aluminum to the central hole) is an early one. Can you lift the cd tray and look if catalog number is printed on the back side of the backcover?

I've got the Japanese LIVING EYES CD but I threw away the OBI strip back when it came out (1989 or so ) ...

Unless this title has gone back in print I'd say it's a Eastern European counterfeit

Early 1984, I guess. Congratulations. That is a nice one.

Almost certainly a counterfeit. Not worth anything.

Likewise I have never seen a WG Polygram 1983 pressing like this.

So this looks like a counterfeit of a dubious looking re-release, supposedly from 2005. And it's only $ 299? :)

Yeah, that's obviously a fake. The authentic West German pressing has no clear plastic ring.

They should not have used polymorphic software to generate the label.:D
