Lists are always fun, especially when they involve a popular genre and they come with some kind of justification. Here's the 'Ten Best Horror Movies'...

    http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/ten-best-horror-movies.html

Not mine, however. As I get older, I doubt the wisdom of including Wicker Man or The Exorcist and would want to include Cat People (the original) and The Haunting - and probably a good few more (Night/Curse of the Demon, Bride of Frankenstein???).

Pretty good list ...................... "Wicker Man" is one of the best IMO ..................... I'd rather have the original "Night of the living Dead" instead of the "Excorcist" .............. and what about "Alien" ?

I really like 70s horror. Just watched The Baby and Crucible of Horror. Not great movies, but odd movies.

Where I get into trouble is with movies like Don’t Look Now, which are sort of suspense thriller horror movies.

Black Christmas is usually on these sort of lists. There is usually some polarization around The Shining. Certainly, The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby, Susperia. I have always loved Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, partly because the crap cuts I watched on TV made the movie even more incomprehensible.

I keep waiting, decade after decade, for Phantom of the Paradise to be properly recognized as not only one of the greatest musicals ever filmed, but as one of the greatest horror movies.

Oh well, at least I get to insert it into threads like this from time to time.

(Agree very strongly with Don't Look Now on the linked list.)

Great list.... apart from The Exorcist. I don't think I will ever understand the praise that gets heaped on this movie. It's utterly comical to me.

I think my own top ten list is close to Martin Scorcese's than this one:

    http://fridaynightboys300.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/martin-scorseses-favourite-11-horror.html

    Not in this order, but...

    The Haunting
    Night/Curse of the Demon
    The Innocents
    Psycho
    Nosferatu
The Devil Rides Out (in spite of the bombastic music)
    Bride of Frankenstein
    Cat People
    Dead of Night
The Omen (the original, not the sequels or the remake)

But on another day, some of the following might replace some of the above: The Wicker Man, Alien, Quatermass and the Pit, Jaws, Night of the Eagle, The Changeling, The Devil's Backbone, The Others, The Shining, The Exorcist, Halloween, I Walked with a Zombie, The Hammer Dracula, Nosferatu The Vampyre, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Masque of the Red Death, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Fly (either or both versions), The Seventh Victim, The Birds.

Thank you for a list of things to watch when my wife is travelling!
(of course, I've seen many of these, but not all).
Would you consider 'Deliverance' to be a horror movie?
What about "No Country for Old Men"?
At one point there was discussion of finally producing a film based on Blood Meridian, but just checking, it looks like it is dead in the water. One of the most disturbing books I've ever read....

Funny, my wife has been away for a week and this is exactly what I do.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is another absolute classic, but watching it now, it does read as a very dark comedy of sorts.

Along the lines of Deliverance, Rituals with Hal Holbrook is one I would love to see again.

    The Sentinel is pretty great.

Oh, Audrey Rose, The Haunting of Julia and The Other.

  18. I feel that way about Peeping Tom - I've seen it twice separated by a decade, and don't really get why people think it's scary, let alone an especially good movie. It's got an interesting concept but drags in the execution, and the explanation for why he does what he does struck me as kind of silly.

My wife and I are right in the middle of our annual month-long horror film fest and just watched Halloween last night. My best horror films would include:

    Psycho
    Night Of The Living Dead
    Dawn of the Dead
    Halloween
    Nightmare on Elm Street
    The Exorcist
    An American Werewolf In London
    Rosemary's Baby
    Alien
    Let the Right One In

We just bought The Exorcist on DVD and it definitely holds up as a horror classic. One that I don't get is The Wicker Man, except maybe I you see it as a camp classic.

What is the deal with The Shinning. Do people mention it because a major movie star was in it, so they went to see it.
I never got the whole thing with it, not scary at all and not a good movie.

This is exactly how I feel. But I don't get the love of Kubrick in general.
